show single post on front page
-
I’d like to only show a single post on the front page and have other posts also have unique URLs. Google finds a number of questions from 6+ years ago and the response seems to be to use something in Settings –> Reading tab. But the current installation on wordpress.com does not have that tab.
How do I configure that? Thanks.
Dennis
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You’ll need to change that setting in your site’s WP Admin DashboardSettings>Reading. See here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/reading-settings/
You can get to the WP Admin Dashboard by adding /wp-admin/ to your base WordPressdotcom website address. (yoursite.wordpress.com)
Be aware that changing this setting also changes it for all archive, tag, category author and search result pages as well.

That sounds like exactly what I want, however when I change things there’s no effect on the blog. I read that link and there’s no indication that I need to do other special stuff to get it to take effect. Huh. I really thought this would be a very common scenario. I will continue experimenting. Thanks!

I see a “changes may not appear until…” for enhanced feeds but I don’t see an indication about the main blog format. I’ll create another post to see…

Could this be anything to do with whether my selected template supports this option? It looks like there’s been a lot of debate about this so it must be fairly easy to configure.

It seems template-related. In fact, i can’t really find any free template that supports what I want. I switched to “Sight” theme which at least provides an top level abstract page and then individual pages with the full articles.

It seems that you are correct that this is theme dependent (and a relatively new development to the best of my knowledge). I tried several themes on my test site with one post set to display on the frontpage and turning off infinite scroll in Reading settings, but no change on the site.
While I don’t have time to test every theme, Manifest, Zoren and Truly Minimal were the only ones of the 7 I did test that respected the single post display on the homepage.
Sorry for no better news.

Yeah, the behavior seems to vary rather widely between themes. I liked Zoren. My ideal would be like Sight (front page with images and short snippets) but then I’d like the article pages to have the images too. http://www.faxxus.com
When I get a chance I’ll dig thru the themes a bit more.
Thanks for the help.
