Showing a blog summary/excerpt as apposed to a full blog post
-
Hello my name is Sharon and I’d like some help with my blog: thewisdomtoothblog.wordpress.com
I have been trying to get my blog to show a summary of the post before directing the viewer to a Read More link. As of today (9/11/14) my first post shows my excerpt and a read more link below it, but my latest post (titled ‘Natural Act) shows the entire post before displaying ‘Read more’ at the end, despite it still being on the front page.
I should add that I spent ages yesterday on WordPress, YouTube and Google trying to find solutions, the only one working was inserting a <more> (add or take some dashes) into the text or clicking a button that looks a lot like a page being ripped in half in the visual after what you want to show.
Although this works, it shows TWO more links, the original ‘read more’ link and a (More) link (if anyone wishes I can edit my post and show you). It does however show a summary but this is obviously not my desire for other posts in the future.
I’ve also searched in my text for a concept (add and take some dashes and arrows) to change it with excerpt, but that doesn’t work.
I’ve also tried adding a custom excerpt as well as a snippet from my post in, but this seems ineffective no matter how much I click update. I’ve also gone to setting and changed it from ‘show full post’ to ‘show summary ‘, which has no avail. I’ve also unticked the sticky box, which didn’t work.
I’d really appreciate any solutions to this, and although I’ve listed many above if there’s different ways I did it wrong please point it out.
I should add I’m 14 and rubbish at tech stuff so a simplified solution may be easiest! :p
Thankyou in advance. (:The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
The setting here > Settings > Reading is only for the RSS Feed summary and does not affect the posts.
If you want to display only excerpts on the front page of the blog followed by read more links, you can insert “the more tag” into each post prior to publication.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/Alternatively, you can switch to using a theme that automatically displays front page excerpts. This is a list of active themes on WordPress.com that use the excerpt instead of full post content. Here are the themes that do provide that feature > https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/theme-with-automatic-excerpts?replies=13#post-1396410
