Showing blog posts as excerpts
-
Hi
I’m new to WordPress and have recently started a blog using the Big Brother theme. After posting a few articles now my home page is now very long and takes a while to load. I want to change the setting from showing my blogs in full to only showing excerpts on the home page.I’ve had a look on the forums and found that there is a line of code which needs to be changed. I haven’t had much experience with coding, and my problem is that I don’t know how to access the code of the Theme. I can’t see an ‘Editor’ button and the ‘Customizer’ doesn’t include the code.
Can anyone help guide me to where I can find the code I need to edit please. If this is a premium feature can you still let me know how to go about it and I can sign up to the premium service.
Also happy to hear other theme suggestions which have excertps as a default layout.
Thanks all!!!!!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there. You’re looking for the more-tag. You can actually insert it using a button in the post editor toolbar, so you don’t need to worry about code. Just make sure you insert the tag on its own line and that you don’t have any formatting like bold or paragraph alignment active when you insert it. You have to manually insert it for every post.
https://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/You can find a list of themes that create automatic excerpts in this thread. However, read the staff comment about the future of this feature as well.

Thanks for that.
I was actually thinking of some coding which I can apply to the whole theme to change how it appears every time. The ‘more’ is a bit messy.
The code is replacing ‘the_content()’ to ‘the_excerpt()’. I’m just not sure where to edit this.
Thanks

I don’t know if you can do this at the coding level. The only code we can change is the theme’s CSS, and you can only do that with the custom design upgrade. But as far as I know CSS can only change the theme’s appearance, not how the theme works.
You can post your question in the CSS customisation forum to find out if this would be possible, and which code you would need:

This is something you could do on a self-hosted WordPress site in a child theme, when you run the WordPress software on your own hosting.
When your site is hosted on WordPress.com, it’s not possible to edit the theme files directly, so the More tag is a good workaround. Another option is choosing a theme that displays excerpts on the blog page by default.
