Showing categories under a single menu item

  I sent a query about this back in June, and staff person “Wensco” answered me. However, I didn’t get around to working on the issue until now – and now I am seeing that what she told me was not really what I was looking for in terms of information. My fault – my question wasn’t clear enough then. So here’s trying again.

  She sent me info on how to do archives in a custom menu, or category pages as part of the menu. However, what I’m trying to do is somewhat different.

  I do not want a list of categories to appear in my menu – it would make the menu way too long. I want a short, simple menu that doesn’t exceed one line at the top of the website. (Similar to what mine is now.)

  So, what I am wanting to add to the menu is simply a “Blog Posts” link, which, when you click or hover over it, shows a drop-down sub-menu of my Categories with post count for each – then by clicking on that category, the thumbnail links would appear for all posts in that Category. In other words, it would behave just like the Categories widget, which I now have in my left side bar.

  My goal is to move function out of the left side bar, and put it in the top menu instead (where I think it will be more visible). To do this, I’m assuming it can’t be a widget – that rather, it’ll have to be built into the menu.

  I don’t know how to do this, and am not finding the answer on your Category Pages link or anywhere else I have looked. Can you possibly help me?

  The steps described at http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-category-pages is the only way to add category items.

  There are no restrictions if you set up a self-hosted/installed version of WordPress (using the free WordPress.org software). We have hosting recommendations at the following link if you are interested:

  I was afraid that might be the answer…though I was hoping there might be a workaround possible within WP hosting (which I’d much prefer to stay with, rather than self-hosting). Thanks.
