Showing images in display-posts shortcode

  Looking at the instructions for display-posts short code, it looks like you can have thumbnail images show up. The instructions are unclear if you need Custom Design to get any images or just to get them positioned on the left. I am trying to get an excerpt with image of any posts I have in the chicken-recipes category. I tried the following code and don’t see images. Any ideas?

  [display-posts category="chicken-recipes" include_excerpt="true" image_size="thumbnail" posts_per_page="100"]
