Showing portfolios projects after switching the theme

  • Unknown's avatar

I switched my portfolio theme from Illustratr into Visual, but now all of portfolio projects I had set up in front are gone. I keep finding them under portfolio projects, but I want them to appear in front as previous theme did.

Have I done something wrong while switching it over? Because all portfolios had gone since the first time I tried another theme design, before visual theme. Please help. Thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Themes handle portfolios in their own ways. Portfolio oriented themes display portfolios by default, other themes like Visual don’t.

If you decided to stick with Visual then,
    – Create a new page for portfolios and add portfolio shortcode to it.
Add this portfolio page to the menu.

I am not sure how exactly do you want your portfolios to display. So please let me know if you want to display your portfolios in a specific way.

Oh okay, I do not know that Visual theme is not suitable for portfolio display, for its preview that looks similar of portfolio oriented.

I tried to switch again to Sketch, this is portfolio oriented, isn’t it? But all of my portfolio is disappear again.

Let me describe my previous front page using Illustratr. It is displayed as a static homepage and showing off the sequence of featured images of my portfolios. So, that was the first preview when you open tseiha.wordpress.com. That’s what I want. I just want to put it back.

Can I make my front page by Sketch theme now, also portfolio oriented, without adding portfolio shortcode? The thing I want to know here is what mistakes I have done, so the next time I won’t do it again.

I have done several trials and error switching between themes, and finally I found my mistake: I haven’t checkmarked the option of Portfolio Page Template on front page’s edit page. I leave it as default page, so the sequences of featured images of course were disappeared.

By knowing this, I understand your statement that Visual theme is not portfolio oriented, not as Illustratr or Sketch theme, is right.

I’m sorry for my carelessness. I am a starter in WordPress. For me, there are so many buttons and options of checkmark, and that’s confusing.

Thank you so much for your help.

  • Hey, no need to be sorry. We are all learning here. :-)

You can showcase all you lovely portfolios in the slider that appears where your logo is currently.

How to add a slider is explained in the Featured Content section of the Sketch theme support document.

You already enabled the Portfolio Page Template on front page on your front page. So just follow the rest of the steps mentioned in the support document to display slider on the front page.

Give it a try and don’t hesitate to ask if you face any problem :-)

Thanks for your kind words have motivated me. I feel welcome here with all of my ignorance. Yes, of course, I will try and learn again until I am accustomed to WordPress. Thank you so much

I have found an obstacle to activate the slider. Should I make one thread if nobody mention it, or can I share it here?

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay, thanks to make it easier for me :-) .

I have opened appearance > customize, and those are the points I don’t understand:
    1. I clicked Header, and I thought it is apart of slider display featured. Because it asked me to prepare 1092 x 400 px for header display, I can put not only 1 image. So I assumed it is not for static header but motion header display. I prepared the suitable images and cropped it. The images I cropped here are what I used for featured images.

(I have chosen static page at “Front”, and changed the location to insert my logo into “Site title”.) Please correct me if I did wrong.

    2. I went to featured content, and after read the Sketch guidance about how to make it works, I put my concern more to the tags for each featured images.

For ex: I want to put the featured image of “Sketchbook”, so I only wrote the tag of “Sketchbook”, as a command to call the sketchbook’s featured image. Which I want if visitors clicked it, there will be some subportfolio projects. Let me emphasize that I don’t put other tag except “Sketchbook”, only.

I have 4 portfolio posts and 4 featured images, so I treated them as I mentioned above. Only 1 tag for each featured image. And what I wrote as tags, I insert it in Customize > Featured Content. And then save. But nothing’s happen? What’s wrong? And what’s purpose of images I prepared in Header section? This confused me.

    Please help, and many thanks.

  • 1. The Header image you set in the Appearance > Customize appears on your blog only if the page has no slider.

So pages using Portfolio Page Template display a slider and pages using other templates display the header you set in Appearance > Customize screen. There are also other pages like individual post/portfolio pages on which header will appear.

I don’t want to swamp you with too much information. So just ignore Featured Images for now. Your first priority is to get slider displayed.

    2. So you entered Sketchbook in Appearance > Customize > Featured Content > Tag name box. That’s good.

Now you need to two more simple steps:

    a) Tag some portfolios with the Sketchbook tag you entered in Appearance > Customize > Featured Content > Tag name box
    b) Set the page template of any of your pages to Portfolio Page Template.

To tag portfolios as mentioned in step (a) above,

    1. Go to Dashboard > Portfolio > All Projects.

    2. Edit a portfolio you wish to appear on slider.

    3. Add Sketchbook tag in the text box in the Tags panel and click Add.

Warning: There is also Project Tags panel but it is not where you should add the tag.

    4. Make sure to click Update button after you add tag.

    5. Repeat steps 1-4 for all other portfolios you wish to display on the slider. You need at least two featured portfolios for slider to appear.

    6. Just ignore featured image for now.

    7. Also you can display a post or page besides portfolios by tagging them with Sketchbook tag. But just ignore this fact for now.

Please try this and let’s see why the slider won’t appear :-)

I am sorry, there is too much text in this update but I hope I made it clear for you.

Yes, I did it, I did it There is a slider now on the top of my blog. Yes, thank you so much. Could we prepared special featured images for slider so the images appear are cropped well?

No need to worry about writing too many words, as long as it is understandable… And It proved successful :-) No pain, no gain.

But there is something I forgot, I do not know where is the option to activate or inactivate the writing section in portfolio template page. I remember I ever ticked a choice to eliminate writing in portfolio page, but now I forgot it.

Where should I find it? Also, thanks because your help on slider display.

  • Good work. Your blog got a slider now.

Could we prepared special featured images for slider so the images appear are cropped well?

Yes. Please check the Featured Images section of the Sketch theme support document for recommended dimensions.

I am not sure what you mean by writing section in the portfolio template? Do you mean excerpt which you can enable from Screen Options at the top right corner of the Edit Portfolios page?

Really, I have checked Sketch image dimensions too, and I found this:
“Image for Featured Content should be at least 1092px in width.”

Alright then, I can prepare the image well, but my question is: where should I put it, I don’t find any boxes to upload image for those specific width but information given by Customize > Header.

About the writing section, I totally forgot it and I almost give up. Well, adventuring some new experience asking us more efforts than we could imagine. Sometimes I feel that it is too exhausted.

By the way, thanks to stop by and put attention to my message. I appreciate it.

We need featured image, not header image.

Please check the steps in the linked support document and add a featured image for each portfolio, which then appears on the slider.

I have read Sketch document. It said that featured content image at least 1092 px in width. But what exact dimension for height? The problem is about height, the image are cropped and and lost its height. Where should I look for that info now?

  • The height of the slider is 400px. So please ensure the size of the images that are going to be on the slider is 1092px by 400px.

I’m sorry if I have asked too many questions and bothering you. I still don’t understand, after I cropped it down, where should I submit it? I mean, where is the dialog box for featured content images to be uploaded? Thanks.

  • No problem at all. Ask as many questions as you have :-)

There is a Featured Image panel at the lower right corner of the Edit Portfolio page. If you can’t see it, then please enable it from the Screen Options at the upper right corner of the page.

Remove the existing featured image to be able to add new one.
