Showing text as monospace ("code-style") in paragraphs

  I’m trying to figure out how to make text inline look like code. I’ve tried Googling this and several websites say to use or

  , but this doesn’t work for my posts. I’m assuming that this is specifically for wordpress.org. How can I do this in wordpress.com? I can do block code with [code] [/code], but not inline.
