Side Bar Layour Issues when looking at Blog on ipad

Hello, I have just published my first blog, yay! The layout is fine on a desk top however, on the ipad the side widget bar moves to the bottom of the post. I have read the instructions on the Support page but can not seem to find the problem. Please help! The blog is http://www.myprosperityproject.com.

While I have you, how do I also get the blog looking the same on a iphone? Again, layout is completely different.

Thanks so much in advance for your help

    Hi Kimberley,

Your blog’s theme is what we call responsive. That means that the theme has been programmed to detect how wide the viewer’s browser is and adjust its output accordingly to provide the best possible viewing experience.

You can test this yourself with your desktop browser. You can go to your site and start adjusting the size of the window. Just grab one corner of the window and drag it smaller and smaller. You’ll notice that the margins get smaller and then disappear. Then the sidebar disappears as well (it’s not gone, it’s been moved to the bottom of the page, like with an iPad). Then the text window will also get more narrow too. It’s all so that your theme retains its appearance but still looks good no matter how big the device.

This feeds in to what was wrong with the iPhone viewing experience as well. You had activated a setting under Appearance >> Mobile to enable a mobile theme. This mobile theme takes over the behaviour of your normal theme when a proper mobile browser is detected (iPad browsers are still counted as normal browsers, just narrower). So because of that setting, you weren’t getting your theme, you were getting our default mobile theme.

I took the liberty of disabling that setting, and I verified that when I load your site, a very narrow version of your theme now loads, which looks quite nice. If you want to re-enable it you just have to go back to Dashboard >> Appearance >> Mobile and turn it back on!

Let me know if you have any questions!

    Hello,

Thanks so much for your reply. I do however, seem to still have the problem. Looking at the blog on the ipad – the side banner (where you can follow the blog, look at archives etc) is still at the bottom of the page instead of to the right hand side. Please help!

    Kimberly,
The behavior you are seeing is by design.

A responsive theme like yours is designed to use space efficiently.

When viewing your site on a tablet, keeping the sidebar on the side would result in extra small text (for both the content and the sidebar), and make it more difficult for you to click the buttons (like follow myprosperityproject).

For this reason, the designers push the sidebar content to the bottom so that it can be read more easily and the buttons can be pressed with ease.

This is a mobile friendly feature, not a problem with your site’s display.

It is possible that less mobile friendly themes allow a sidebar on tablets, but likely because the designer didn’t build it with mobile in mind. I don’t recommend going this route.

Let me know if you have questions.
