Side Bar Misplaced

  • Unknown's avatar

    Just recently, my sidebar has changed from being at the side (right-hand side) of the page to being at the bottom the page – and not as a footer, but rather just as a long, misplaced “side” bar. The footer is at the right side where my sidebar was.

    It returns to being at the side when clicking on a different page.

    This is typically caused by an open HTML tag in one of your posts.

    (1) >Settings > Writing a
    Select “WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and then click “Save Changes.”

    (2) Starting with your latest post, open it in the editor, make one minor change such as adding a space and then deleting it, and then click “Update Post.” Check your blog and see if it is back to normal. If not, open the next post and do the same thing until it goes back to normal.

    BTW I answered you above and I’m still waiting for your blog to load fully. It hasn’t done that as yet so I can’t confirm that your question is actually about a blog that’s being free hosted by wordpress.com or not. If it proves that your blog is not being free hosted by wordpress.com then you are posting to the wrong support forum and should be posting here instead http://wordpress.org/support/

    Still loading …

    @tt: No admin bar, source code says WPVersion=2.9.2, PluginUrl=blahblah, etc.

    Sigh…

    @panos
    I didn’t view source code as I’m having bad vision day. Thanks for wading in and confirming what I suspected.

    Like I’ve said before, is there no end to this?

    Apparently “8 Things to Know BEFORE Posting” is a string of extremely obscure words…

    @Panos

    Like I’ve said before, is there no end to this?

    IMO there is no end to this nor will there ever be and end to it. While the wordpress code belongs to the whole open source community, the cachet that goes with the name “WordPress,” in essence, a trademark, belongs to Automattic/Matt and it/he owns own the .com TLD.

    In addition to that all of those bloggers self hosting wordpress.org installs, who use Akismet and wordpress stats and other WordPress (Automattic products), and all those who are added as users on wordpress.com blogs and …. yada, yada, yada must have wordpress.com accounts.

    The third factor is a significant number of people never read sticky posts and do not actually wish to become independent in the sense of learning what’s in the support documentation and using it. Some are part of the “pop-op” generation. It’s possible they may always expect to pop in create a thread and get answers without making any effort to try and locate them on their own, and if challenged to become independent they may not hesitate to ‘pop-off” at the mouth while posturing as a customer when what they have is a “free” of charge blog and free hosting.

    The fourth factor is that Automatic Staff, who have support positions are paid to be “Happiness Engineers.” Anyone who works for any business is expected to be a good will ambassador for the business. It seems unlikely and unrealistic to expect they will ever take a stand and emphasize teaching those who post how to fish, as opposed to serving them the cooked product on a platter with a smile. (No offense to Staff intended. This is the reality of being an employee in all customer service occupations across the board.)

    What can Volunteers do about how they feel about the realities I isolated above?

    (1) Choose to make the “happiness choice” between our ears and accept the realities.
    (2) Choose to make the “unhappiness choice” between our ears, especially when we find we have devoted time and energy to helping a person, who turns out to be a wordpress.org blogger, who has either

    • (a) failed to read the sticky post,
    • (b) or who knows darn well they ought not to post here but are doing so anyway in order to get an answer to their question faster than they can get one on the wordpress.org support forum.
      (3)Choose to stop answering questions at all … shrug

    @tt: I can only tell you what this volunteer will do.

    I saw some strange things over the past few days. I saw a couple of new “Happiness Engineers” give wrong replies. I saw another new “Happiness Engineer” give actual advice on wp.org problems. I saw another one (hewsut) add redundancies to the bot response (twice) after Mark hinted to you not to do so; and when I replied to hewsut by pasting the link to Mark’s remark, my replies were deleted and the threads were closed.

    In view of all that, I will keep on trying to help wp.com members, but I will no longer help with directing wp.org members to their forum (or ask for blog link when not provided): I say let Happiness Engineers do those chores. After all, at least one of them is incredibly excited.
