side bar problem

  • Unknown's avatar

    Why would my sidebar be pushed all the way down and not visible until below my first post? When my husband went to my site on his computer it looked fine, but for me it is not showing correctly ….?

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    If you have been copying and pasting text from elsewhere without using either icon 5 or icon 6 in Row 2 of the visual editor, please see here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text

    The reason your sidebar has fallen and is displaying below your posts is either due to copying and pasting or it can also be a result of importing text containing invalid HTML.
    Typically this is caused by an open HTML tag in one of your posts.

    Go to Settings > Writing and select “ ___ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically” and then scroll down and click “Save Changes.”

    Now, starting with your latest post, open it in the editor, make one minor change such as adding a space and then deleting it, and then click “Update Post.” Check your blog and see if it is back to normal.

    I didn’t know about those icons so thank you for that. I followed the rest of your suggestion, but no, it’s still now looking correct on my computer….but it’s OK on my husband’s computer. On my computer, it doesn’t matter if I log in as admin or just go to my site as a visitor – side bar still not showing until before first post. ….

    I have also logged out completely and gone back in – no difference …

    What browser and version are you using?

    I needn’t have asked…
    The issue is probably due to the image in your Image widget. Explorer has difficulty understanding (among other things) image scaling down, especially if the images are hosted elsewhere. To avoid such issues, you should make copies of your images, edit them in an image editing application to scale them down to a width that doesn’t exceed the width of your sidebar,* upload them via Media > Add New, copy the file URL, use that URL in the Image widget.
    * See here:

    Or you can add a Text widget instead of an Image widget, and use the code you can find here:

    yes, as soon as you asked what browser … I used Firefox to check it out and it looks fine there. Still, I checked out my image and that doesn’t seem to be the problem. I have been using it since the beginning and it hasn’t caused a problem before…. if I’m Ok on my husband’s computer and if it looks right in Firefox … I should just forget it and consider the issued solved – ?

    In my opinion you should do as I suggested instead of just forgetting it, since (unfortunately) the majority of users use Explorer (because that’s what they find in their PCs, and most of them don’t bother to replace it with a better browser or don’t know they can/should).

    Well, actually, I did; as I said I checked out the image size etc and that wasn’t the problem. As for using the text box – I guess I may be user illiterate, somewhat, but I wasn’t clear how to use an image in the text box, despite going to your link, and what I did try didn’t give me any joy at all, no text box, no photo…..

    I’m not seeing any other obvious issue on your front page. If you were using a different theme, you would be able to see if the culprit is a post by clicking on each post title to view that single post alone. But the theme you’re using doesn’t display the sidebar on the single post view, so you can’t use that method. What you can do is temporarily set the number of posts per page to 1 in Settings > Reading, then browse all your category pages. If you do this and locate a post that makes the sidebar fall to the bottom, I can them examine the code of the post and maybe find out what the issue is.
