side column possible with free Manifest or can it only be had for cust. upgrade?
-
How do I get a right-hand side column using the Manifest theme? I saw another blogger’s Manifest themed blog and he had a right-hand column, but I can’t figure out how to do that? Do I have to pay to for a Custom Design upgrade or can it be had for free?

The theme is not designed to have a sidebar. This is a multiuser blogging platform and every blog wearing the same theme is using the same underlying template. We cannot edit templates or themes. The CSS upgrade cannot be used to add a sidebar to pages which do not have one already. That would require hacking of the underling PHP script files, which we cannot do on free hosted WordPress.com blog .

OK, thanks. That’s weird, though, that this blogger who was promoting Manifest as a great theme for writer and was using that theme for his own blog (he said he was using Manifest) had somehow gotten a sidebar on his. I guess he must’ve hacked the script files.
I appreciate your quick answer, though. -
Yes, the most likely explanation is that he has a version of Manifest that runs on WordPress.org software http://themes.jimbarraud.com/manifest/ and he hacked the theme to add a sidebar.

It is possible but only if you move to self hosting, ante up for web hosting and set up a WordPress.org install. Is having a sidebar worth that? The decision is yours to make.
