side widgets disappeared

All my widgets from both sides of the pages have disappeared. Google translaete, categories, search box, videos, recent posts, top posts etc etc. All gone. Can you tell me how to fix it? I have tried adding a new one and saving it but it doesn’t appear. Also tried three different browsers, still same. Please help.

  • Hi –

It looks like the widget permissions need adjusted. I can see them all when I click on the Home link from the menu.

Do you see that as well?

To edit the widget visibility settings go here: https://envirowatchrangitikei.wordpress.com/wp-admin/customize.php

    1. click on the widget title
    2. scroll down to visibility
    3. make changes needed
    4. save

hmm, i did try that initially as yes they only disappeared from the news page, but it didn’t seem to help. I even added a totally new widget with the correct visibility settings but it did not show up on the page at all.

I’ve done a temp repair by notifying readers to go to the home page instead while it’s sorted. I was advised to change to another theme then back to the one I had to remedy it. I’m nervous to do this to be honest in case it all goes to custard completely. When I have time today I will have another tinker with the widget visibility thing. The prob also is the formatting of the news page articles has all gone awry. Formatting is strange.

  • Hi there,

I can see widgets just fine on the News page on your site, which appears to be https://envirowatchrangitikei.wordpress.com/ – that’s what loads if I click on News in the menu.

The Home link on your menu goes to https://envirowatchrangitikei.wordpress.com/home-2/, which is a different page and not one set as the front page of your site.

On what page exactly are you not seeing the widgets and seeing the messed up formatting?

From your description it sounds like it’s rather an HTML issue than a widget visibility setting problem – poorly formed HTML, or HTML copied in when you pasted content from another source, can cause formatting on posts to be come messed up and push sidebar widgets down to the bottom of the page instead. The only way to fix that is to find the post that has the faulty HTML, and remove the faulty code.

hi and thanks for replying. About some time this afternoon the whole prob mysteriously righted itself!! All the widgets reappeard & the formatting is back to normal. I had even had a second go at adding new widgets. Thanks for your help anyway. Glad it’s sorted.

  • Hmm, I still think it’s HTML, but it could be you made an edit to a post that fixed the issue without you even realising it. Glad to hear it’s working now, though :)
