Sidebar and Archives

    Hi,

I just saw today a feature that I liked about archives (on a different type of blog). In the sidebar, underneath all widgets, there was a list of titles of all the posts made on that blog. They were separated by semi-colons, and a click on the title would take you to the post. It was certainly a long list, but a fantastic way to simplify archives. (In addition to the chronological listing).
Is there such a feature on WordPress, and if not, is it coming soon?
    Thank you!

Easier to let you know if you give us a link so we can see it.

And you can certainly do this: you make a text widget and add it all in yourself. You have to update every time you make a post, but it’s doable.

You are right, I should have left the link right away. The archives are at the lower end of the sidebar.

Yes, I thought of a widget with them in it. But these archives above link to the text. Would they do that is a widget? The whole 200 or so of them?

    Thanks for the reply.

Yes, you could do that in a text widget. (Unless there is a limit to the number of links?) But can you imagine what that list would look like when you had 2000 posts?

I don’t know with 2000 posts, but I was very inspired when I saw the archives on that blog. It makes perfect sense. Searching for my own post, with a vague idea what month it belongs to, it takes a while to find it. This way they are right there. And it has an additional benefit of the esthetics. I quite like the look of this chaotic mess of titles – it’s like a treasure chest :)
Thanks for the reply. I’ll take a look at the instructions about widgets again.

One suggestion would be to use the recent posts widget and set the number of posts to display to a large number. I tried 50, and it worked at that number. Not sure what the maximum is.

You can even change the name of the widget to “archive” if you wish.

Thanks for the suggestion, the sacred path, but reading over the widget f.a.q. it says that the limit is 10 for recent posts. In any case, if it can’t be done as the whole thing, I wouldn’t go into it. It has also changed since the last time I’ve done anything with it, I’ll have to study it again.

However, I am looking at this where Vivian said that the titles in a widget would work as links to the actual posts – but, how?

I set mine to 50 and it showed 50 in the widget, so it could be that the FAQ is wrong.

The FAQ has this entry on how to write links http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/07/01/how-to-write-links/ That’s what you would need to do for each of your entries. (Once a month, I update my Popular Posts text widget by doing exactly that.) Of course, I only hand-code about 15 entries.

As for searching for old posts – I never use the archives to do that. I generally type the words in the search box on my blog.

Thank you very much to both.
