As a newbie i’m having one heck of a time trying to figure out the sidebar. i want to ad graphics that link, plain graphics, and some text. i’m not finding anything on this in faq or the forum….maybe i’m half blind. can anyone help please?

From the dashboard, go to presentation. Then click for sidebar widgets. Add a text widget and edit the html (images, links, w/e), and save your sidebar. Keep checking your site until it looks the way you’d like it to. You can add more later.

thanks people…what i’m trying to do is upload an image and the image links to another site. suggestons?

  • Unknown's avatar

It would be easier to help you if you provided a link to the image in question.
These are the instructions from the FAQ’s http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/10/18/put-an-image-in-your-sidebar/
Provided the image is not an iframe embed or java script embed (which wordpress.com programming strips out for security reasons) then inserting an image into a WordPress.com text widget and displaying it in your sidebar will result from following this walk through.
–> write post –> upload image into the post –> send image to editor –> copy the entire image code from the post and go to –> presentation –> sidebar widgets –> text widget –> open text widget by clicking on the labeled part on the righ hand side and then paste in the image code –> save changes

ok, i’ve gotten as far as being able to put a pic up in the sidebar….but how do i link it? <img src=’http://harpervalley.wordpress.com/files/2006/10/normalize2.jpg’ alt=’normalize2.jpg’ />

and i want it linked to http://normalacy.wordpress.com

also, i can’t find any way to get into the html….i see something for css, but not html, and i can’t even see where to change the css.

ahhhhhh!!! thanks for guiding me so far, this is not a simple site!!!!

Okay take a deep breath and please accept my apology for not doing a good job on this.

The code of the underlaying theme templates at wordpress.com cannot be altered because we are all on a shared multi-user blogging platform here and such editing would affect everyone. The kind of editing you did to your theme at Blogger cannot be done here.

From what I can see you have the Cutline theme. Unless you purchased an upgrade you cannot change the appearance of your blog by altering the cascading style sheets through css customization.

If you would like to shut off the visually rich text editor and use the ordinary one I can give you better instructions -> dashboard -> users -> your profile (find the check box for use the visually rich text editor and uncheck it) then click -> update profile

Forget about the text widget for step one. Go to a “write” post and follow the instructions for up loading an image into a post and link it there. Now simply copy the result which is the linked image code. Step two is to open a text widget and paste the linked image code into it and click save changes.

good gawdess…i don’t even know what the visually rich text rich editor is!!!! i did make my pic smaller though, it was way too big. all i know is i go to dashboard and follow from there. so to get the pic up on the sidebar i followed your instruction. but, how do i make it as a link to another site?????

thanks for staying with me on this!

  • Unknown's avatar

oh wait, your instructions for badges didn’t show at first….will go there.

  • Unknown's avatar

@#$#$%#$@#$ …..it says to scroll down and there will be a place to upload an image to link. no such luck. is this a browser issue…i use safari.

  • Unknown's avatar

I know form reading forum posts that safari has issues. I do not know what they are. Is this helpful? http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/06/16/know-your-browser/
If it isn’t I suggest that you send in a feedback (button on top right hand corner of any of your pages) and ask staff to help you.

  • Unknown's avatar

thanks. i went into firefox but still, nada. there’s an ‘advanced’ section that allows you to paste in your image url….so i copied in the code from when i uploaded the image to the sidebar. still no go. im really frustrated. hot bath time!!!!

  • Unknown's avatar

Well, it’s a good thing that we’re friends and that you aren’t ticked off that I didn’t have the answers that solved the riddle. May I suggest that you wait for drmike our forum Moderator or Podz or another staff member to get back to you tomorrow? And BTW a hot bath is exactly where I’m heading for too. :)

I just had one, so maybe I can help. I put a pic into a sidebar widget and made it link to another site, and believe me, if I can do it, ANYONE can do it. You can see it on my blog: http://raincoaster.com

I did it by putting this text into the sidebar widget:

    < a href=”http://gawker.com/news/fuck-it-i%27m-so-out-of-here/letter-from-the-outgoing-editor-i-havent-had-champagne-for-a-long-time-207576.php” >< img src=”http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v22/raincoaster/Blogging/Wankerinnout.gif” border=”0″ alt=”Black Friday the 13th” >

So the first part, the gawker.com part, is the external link. The Second part is the picture itself, which is already hosted at Photobucket as you can see from the code. If you copy that text and put your LINK in where I’ve got the gawker stuff, and your picture URL where I’ve got my photobucket one it should work.

I’m trying to figure out what the question is actually.

  • Unknown's avatar

thanks gawker!!! basically the instructions might go like this (to a newbie)
    Sidebar graphic to extrernal link:
    go to dashboard.
    click in ‘write’.
    scroll down to image upload.
browse for your image and click ‘upload’.
this will take you to a new page.
select either ‘thumbnail’ or ‘full size’
    click ‘send to editor
    your html will appear there.
in the first portion of the html is the link referece page.
change this to link to the site you want (ie. <a href="http://www.google.com">Google</a> instead of the long text written.
make sure you leave in the <img src> info.
copy this info with your cursor.

    go to ‘presentation’
    click on ‘widgets’
drag a ‘text’ widget from the bottom into the box above.
click on the blue in the ‘text’ widget in the right hand corner
    a popup will appear.
paste the info you’ve copied in there.
    cose the popup window.
click ‘save changes’ to the far right.
click ‘view your site’ and make sure everything went accordingly.

    sound good?

  • Unknown's avatar
