Sidebar content in Suburbia theme
-
Hi, I’ve just changed to the Suburbia theme, and would like to add a simple search box and subscribe button to the left-hand sidebar (under the list of pages). I tried using a custom menu, but it only seemed to allow me to add links and categories. Is there any way to do this?
Also, can I delete the “shortlink” box in the right-hand sidebar?
Thanks.

rootjosh, thanks for the reply. I still need some help here.
I’ve added widgets to Suburbia’s right-hand sidebar (the one that only appears on posts in single view), and to the three bottom areas. For me, it would be much better if I could put some of them instead in the left-hand sidebar, which is always present. But this option does not seem to appear in the widgets area of the dashboard.
I tried a custom menu, which DOES allow changes to the left-hand sidebar, but the options seem to be limited to pages, links or categories. What I’d like to add is a Follow button and a search box.
Any suggestions very welcome!

That lefthand sidebar is, as you noticed, a menu and not a widget area. So you aren’t going to be able to put widgets there.

Ah, OK. That’s a shame.
It means when people land on the front page, the only extra information I can provide is right at the bottom. I’ve turned off infinite scrolling, to give them a chance to find the search and follow options – but it would have been better if they were more obvious.
What about my other questions (above) – can I remove the default “shortlink” box in the righthand sidebar?
Thanks for your help.

That is something that you should be able to change via CSS. It would require the Custom Design upgrade.

I would suggest making a post on the CSS Customization forum here:

Lots of good advice there and knowledgeable people.

rootjosh, thanks. I don’t have the CSS upgrade and don’t think it’s worth it just for this one change. I’ll live with that one unnecessary box.
