sidebar content is missing

  using twenty eleven but cannot see what I add to main sidebar. Content layout to allow sidebar is selected

  Hi there,

  Sorry for the confusion! You should be able to add content to your site’s sidebar in the Widgets section of your site’s Customizer, but for some reason the sidebar widget area isn’t showing up there. I’m checking with our developers about that so they can fix that issue.

  In the meantime, you can add widgets to your site’s main sidebar from the Widgets page in the classic dashboard here:

  Dear Rachel
  many thanks for this. I had found how to add widgets in the admin section but nothing I add is appearing. Am I doing something wrong or is the issue linked to the main sidebar issue you have flagged to developers?

  Hi Hazel,

  Oh, I see what you mean now! Sorry about that. I’ll make sure that the developers know that the widgets aren’t showing up at all, even if you add them in the dashboard there. I’ll let you know as soon as I get an update about that!

  Hi Hazel,

  I got a bit turned around yesterday, but I’ve sorted out what’s going on:

  1. In your site’s Customizer, you’ll only see the widget areas that are available on the page you’re looking at on your site. So the sidebar widget area will only appear when that page includes a sidebar.

  2. Each page on your site can have a different page template. In the Twenty Eleven theme you’re using, the default page template doesn’t include a sidebar (even if you’ve chosen the theme layout that includes a sidebar). To add a sidebar to your pages, you can choose the “Sidebar Template” for those pages.

  When you’re looking at a page that’s using the sidebar template, you’ll see the option in the customizer to add widgets. Since you’re using that layout with a sidebar, you’ll also see that sidebar by default on blog pages like this one:
