Sidebar Doesn’t Appear in IE
-
I use Firefox and there’s no problem with the sidebar, but when I look at my blog in IE, the sidebar is all the way down at the bottom of the home page, but in its proper place on all other pages.
Is this an Explorer problem, or is there a WordPress fix?
Thanks!

BTW, my name is Hugh O’Donnell. I have two WordPress blogs, but “repairman,” my user name for WordPress, links back to my Blogger site. What’s with that!?
The blog I’m having the sidebar problem with is http://hsdboardmember.wordpress.com.
Thanks again!

Hi this is a support forum only for those with blogs free hosted by wordpress.com and your wordpress.com username is linked to a blogspot blog. Is your question about a wordpress.com blog? If so will you please post the url.?
What you describe can be caused by the blogger inserting an image that is too large into the blogging space or copying and pasting from Word.

(1) This is where to link your wordpress.com username to your wordpress.com blog -> Dashbaord -> Users -> Your Profile
scroll to webiste, delete the blogspot url and insert the wordpress.com blog url
then click “Update Profile”(2) The url for the wordpress.com blog you provided above leads back to this page when clicked http://wordpress.com and this is an indication that the blog is set to be “private”.
(3) To change the privacy settings go here -> Options -> Privacy
Privacy Options
Blog visibility:
___I would like my blog to appear in search engines like Google and Sphere, and in public listings around WordPress.com.
___I would like to block search engines, but allow normal visitors
___I would like my blog to be visible only to users I chooseMake your change and then click “Update Options” to save.
(4) Once we can see your blog we can begin to deal with your sidebar issue.

I went to “Edit User” and fixed the “repairman” link. I think I’m official now! :)
Thanks! (You folks are quick!!)

I have located your blog and I’m viewing it in both firefox 2.0.0.9 and in IE7 at the same time. The good news is I see your sidebar positioned exactly where it ought to be! -
Here’s the link for browsershots. It’s a free service that allows you to test how your blog looks in multiple browsers and it usually takes about 20-45 minutes to produce results.

Thanks, timethief. It’s still goofy in my IE view, but maybe that’s just my computer.
The important thing is how the public views it, and you’ve confirmed that all is well.
Thank you very much!
Hugh

I’ve been having the same problem with my sidebar getting shoved down for the past two days. Checking and editing my posts didn’t help. Then I went back 10 posts, and founf the same problem.
It turns out that a commenter’s name in the Sidebar – Recent Comments was too long! The sidebar can shove the main bar too!

@scottthong
Thanks very much for posting that. I was unaware that stuff in comments could cause that. -

I’m having the same problem with my sidebar at the bottom in IE. all my sidebar items are in widget boxes so I can’t see how a long name could cause it. Any other fixes?

It looks fine in Safari and in Firefox. One thing that can cause this is if an image in a blog post is too wide for the theme. I see only one on the “State department” post that may be too wide. The reason I say that is that in Safari and in Firefox, here foot on the right is cut off a little.
I don’t see your theme listed here: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/09/25/how-big-can-my-images-be/ so you might have to experiment a little.

It’s about 510 px wide, so take it down to say 480 or 490 and see if that does not do it. Safari and Firefox will keep things as they should be and just cut off the right hand side of the photo where IE will not, which “breaks” the theme and causes the sidebar to drop to the bottom of the page.

Thanks Sacred, I downsized the image but it did not help. Good idea though. I’ve had this happen before as some others here have as well. I don’t mind using firefox but I know that most readers are using IE and thus, don’t see the sidebar. Any other help will be greatly appreciated.

RE: Sidebar problem. FYI, I just removed all widgets from my sidebar and brought them back in one at a time. I even reordered them to see if any single widget would allow the sidebar to return to the top of the page. No Luck. So the problem is not with the content of the widgets. Maybe with IE? or something else in WP? I haven’t tried a different theme and don’t want to but I will if I have to.
