sidebar doesn't show up

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, I am new here and using the theme ‘spun’. I tried to create a sidebar and already added widgets but nothing shows up on my blog, no matter where I place the sidebar (connected to category/page/static page/front page and so on). What am I doing wrong?

  • Hello Janina!

I can see your sidebar and the widget you’ve placed in. On any of your website’s pages/blogs, there’s a tiny “+” circle button at the bottom of them. On your homepage, for example, it’s under the “older post’ button.

Click on the + button and it’ll open your sidebar(s)! I can see that you’ve used only the Sidebar 2 so far, while you can place your widgets also onto the other sidebars (1 and 3) if you fancy putting the widgets in rows instead of in columns.

Hope that is useful! Let me know if you have any more questions or there’s anything else I can help you with. Thanks!

Thanks a million! That’s a helpful hint! I didn’t see that little +…Actually I was using sidebar 1, where is the difference between sidebar 1, 2 and 3? And is there no option to actually have the sidebar in the side instead of the bottom and without having to click first on that little plus?

  • You’re very welcome, Janina!

You can find all your sidebars on the widget area: Dashboard>Appearance>Widgets.
Here’s the direct URL to the page – you need to be logged in with your username and password to access it: https://artofbeinghappyblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/widgets.php

You can see the different sidebars on the right side of the screen, while on the left you can find all the widgets available for you to use.

The differences between sidebars 1, 2 and 3 is only the position the widgets placed in them take on the page. Sidebar 1 takes the far left position of the page, Sidebar 2 takes the centre and Sidebar 3 takes the far right. All the sidebars can feature any of the widgets you’ve got available.

As per theme layout/structure, your sidebars are set to disclose under the “+” button. To get them in the side of the screen or display as a ‘regular’ footer, I’m afraid you need to pick another theme.
Alternatively, I believe it’s possible to tweak the theme with a couple of CSS custom lines.

I hope all is clear! Feel free to let me know if there’s anything else you need and I’ll be happy to help. Thanks and have a happy Sunday!
