Sidebar Image Link Widgets

Since time immemorial I have used the widgets to set image links of my book covers on the sidebar, linking them to posts about the books. I want to keep on doing exactly what I’ve been doing but this plague the block editor has now seeped into this feature as well and it’s indecipherable. Please look at the first book link on the sidebar page -Rainbringer: Zora Neale Hurston Against The Lovecraftian Mythos. I want to exactly replicate that feature for a new widget for a new book with a new image. How do I do this step by step because nothing is intuitive any more?

    Hi there!

You might be having trouble not because of the blocks but because the theme you’re using (Quentin) was retired in August 2011.

It looks like you can still use those same widgets, though. Go to Appearance -> Widgets, wait for the widgets to load (the Classic widgets take a while), then click one of the legacy image widgets to select it, then click the three-dot menu and select “Duplicate”. This should create a copy of that widget that you can update with a new image, link, and description. Here’s a screenshot that should help illustrate what you need to do.

However, since your theme will not be compatible with modern versions of WordPress since it hasn’t been updated in 10+ years, you might want to browse the various themes we have available today to find one that you like. Then, you can use the Image Block which will allow you to insert an image and add a link in a similar way to your sidebar.

    I hope that helps!

Thank you! I’ll take a look at this….I have been reluctant to switch to a new theme for fear that all my links will go dead. Not sure what transitioning to a new one entails….

Switching themes changes the layout and look of your site – it should not impact your content at all.

To assuage your concerns, you could set up a new free site to try out new themes – you can export your content from your current site and import it into this new site to see how everything will behave. You may need to set up your sidebar widgets again in this testing phase- but it’ll give you some practice in using the Image Block for your book links.

    I hope that helps!
