sidebar in free Apostrophe2 theme not working

  Apostrophe2 does not show a sidebar although the theme info shows it. All the widgets in the primary and secondary sidebars are added at the end of the home page. Also, the colours are restricted to the given palette and cannot be changed. Apostrophe2 is listed as a free theme, but not all features of the theme seem to be available for free!
  I do like Apostrophe2 but I badly need a sidebar enabled. Can someone help me out ? Thanks in advance.

  Sidebar Widgets

  Apostrophe 2 includes four optional Widget areas: https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/ three in a sidebar alongside your content, and one area in the footer of your page.

  The three widget areas in the sidebar differ only in background color and font size. The primary section uses a bright background to attract attention. This is a great place to put a newsletter sign-up form or some introductory text.
