Sidebar is missing in every theme I choose

No matter what theme I choose I do not see my widgets in the ‘sidebar’ area even though I add them there. Instead they float below my posts. They appear in the footer but when I try to put a widget in sidebar it goes automatically underneath my posts..help please !
