Sidebar missing when applying front page template
-
I am using the theme “Twenty Twelve,” which is supposed to have a sidebar on its standard front page template. When I edit my page and I select “Front Page Template” under the Page Attributes, I don’t get the automatic sidebar described with the theme. (I am remembering to click on “update.”)
What do I need to do to fix it? Thanks!

Widgets and No-sidebar Layout
Twenty Twelve loves the no-sidebar look as much as you do. Use the optional “Full-width page, no sidebar” page template to remove the sidebar from any page. Want to simplify even more and remove the sidebar from all your posts and pages? You guessed it! Simply remove any active widgets to the Main Sidebar area and the sidebar will disappear. http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/twentytwelve/ -
The “Front Page Template” doesn’t have a sidebar: it has footer widget areas. If you want a sidebar, you need to select the Default template.

Thanks for your comments! I actually do want a sidebar. The blurb about 2012 says, “Features include a front page template with its own widgets…” I have now applied every template offered (including ‘default’) and updated, and it’s still stuck without a sidebar.
Next I think I’ll try switching to another template and see if the sidebar gets written back in somehow.

Did you open the widgets and check the “visibility” settings inside theme. That setting defines exactly which pages the widgets will be displayed on. http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2013/05/28/widget-visibility/

I changed to the Twenty Ten template and got a sidebar. I changed back to the Twenty Twelve Template and no sidebar. So Twenty Ten is now my new favorite template! But thanks very much for the helping posts – they kept me from getting discouraged while learning!

Thanks, timethief. The visibility was already on, BUT I found out that I can drag the widgets, and it will create the sidebar as soon as I do. On other templates, something was already in place, but this will get me what I want to see there. Success! :-D
