SIdebar moved mysteriously. Need HTML help FAST!

  • Unknown's avatar

The sidebar on my blog theme, Chaotic Soul, suddenly disappeared from the left top and moved itself to the right bottom. I already cleared the cashe and history on my browser. I know next to NOTHING about HTLM so I’m afraid to go messing around with the source code. PLEASE help me.

I paid for the upgraded membership and now I need you!

  • Hi there – your sidebar looks fine to me in Chrome and Firefox – did you get this sorted out?

Just let me know if you need further help!

  • Unknown's avatar

No. I use Chrome and just checked. On my lap top, it looks like the sidebar is missing from the top left. I’ll go check my site on another computer to see if it’s my lap top.

Then I’ll get back to you. Thanks!

Okay, it appears to be a problem with how my site looks on my laptop. Do you have any ideas about why that would be the case? Yesterday it looked normal. Today, it doesn’t.

As I said, I cleared the history and the cache (as suggested on one of your help pages).

Anything else you can suggest? I’m glad to know everything looks normal to everyone else, but it’s disconcerting to see it all wonky on the computer I do all my writing on!

    Thanks,

    Lorna

  • I bet it’s disconcerting! A few things you might want to check:

    – have you accidentally changed the zoom? Try going to View > Actual Size to reset it
    – have you inadvertently changed the resolution on your laptop?

  • Unknown's avatar

If I changed these things, they were inadvertent. I’ll poke around and try to figure out how to adjust these things.

As you can probably tell, I’m not the most computer savvy person around. :(

I’ll report back to you, Kathryn.

All I could find was a “Magnify” function. I definitely didn’t do that. My screen otherwise appears normal.

The resolution settings are all at the recommended levels and I’ve never been in that window before, so I doubt it’s that either.

    Hmmm.

  • Lorna – do you have another browser installed on your laptop where you could check your site?

Would it also be possible to upload a screenshot of what you see in your laptop to help in troubleshooting?

Here’s a guide on how to make a screenshot, if you’re not sure: http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

You can upload the screenshot in your Media Library and then post a link or give me the file name and I’ll take a look. Thanks!

Hi! I used Explorer to check out my site on my lap top this morning and it looks fine, so it seems that Google Chrome is the problem.

I’m now going to learn how do a screen shot and upload it to my media files.

    You’re a gem! Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

Here is a post with the screen shots–it’s private (I hope!)

Have you ever seen anything like this?

  • Hi Lorna – thanks for the screenshot.

One thing you might try doing is deactivating all your Chrome extensions and seeing if that helps. If so, you can reactivate each one-by-one to determine which one is conflicting. You’ll find your extensions listed here:

    chrome://chrome/extensions/

Let me know how it goes.

That sound ominous, but I’ll give it a try.

I disabled the 4 I saw, refreshed the page, and it didn’t make a difference.

    Now what?

  • Thanks for testing that.

Would you mind letting me know the resolution of your laptop display so I can see if we can replicate this at our end? Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

    1366 x 768

    Thanks so much!

  • Hi there,

I hope you don’t mind me hopping in for Kathryn!

Could you try one more thing while we look on our end? In Chrome, could you open an incognito window (File > New Incognito Window) and check out your site? If it looks the same to you, we can narrow it down further!

    Cheers!

  • Unknown's avatar

Sure. I’ll try and get back to you.

  • Unknown's avatar

I tired the incognito sign in and it made no difference. Chrome really doesn’t seem to like me! :(

  • Ok, if it happened with the incognito window, that helps us know for sure that there are no sneaky add-ons or extensions messing with Chrome!

So if you drag the corner of your Chrome window so that you resize the window (either as wide as it will go or narrower), do you see a difference in the way the sidebar is displaying?

  • Unknown's avatar

No difference in the way the page displays no matter how wide or narrow I drag the display.
