See here for the three layout choices the Blaskan theme has. You have the single column layout because you placed the widgets in the Footer Widget Area http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/blaskan/
I just discovered that I’m limited when it comes to the number of widgets I can place in “The primary sidebar”. I now have the two column layout because of the number of widgets I used. I expected to see three columns so maybe there is something “funky” going on with this theme. I have flagged it so it gets moved to the Themes Forum where we can get support from Themes Staff.

Themes Staff:
There appears to be something odd going on with the theme. I ought to have 3 layout choices but I don’t. If place all widgets in the Primary Widget Area I get a single column display. If I move the last two widgets out of the Primary Widget Area into the Secondary Widget Area then I get a two column display. -
Hi there, I had a look a your site http://deepthoughts123.wordpress.com/ in Firefox, Chrome and Safari. In all three browsers, I see your sidebar in the right-hand column, not at the bottom.
Did you make a change to your theme setup that solved your issue, perhaps following one of timethief’s suggestions, or are you still having a display problem?
If you’re still seeing the issue, would it be possible to upload a screenshot to help in troubleshooting?
Here’s a guide on how to make a screenshot, if you’re not sure: http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/
You can upload the screenshot in your Media Library and then post a link so I can see it.
Also, could you please let me know in which browser/version you’re seeing this problem. If you’re not sure which you’re using, please visit this page and see what it says under “Web Browser”: http://supportdetails.com/
Thanks very much.

Do you still have the layout issue you had? It works for me as expected though. When either one of primary or secondary widget area has a widget, we get two column layout, when both widget areas have widgets, we get three column layout.

No, it’s not working properly. It’s still doing exactly what I stated above.I want to have these widgets all in the primary sidebar:
Welcome
Recent Posts
Search
Recent Comments
Visitors
CopyrightWhen I set them up that way I get all the widgets displaying in the footer area despite the fact I placed NONE in the secondary sidebar area or in the footer area.
If I move these two widgets (Visitors and Copyright) out of the primary widget area and into the secondary sidebar, then I get what I expected when I placed all widgets in the primary sidebar area ie. a single sidebar display!

Thanks for reporting this. I can now confirm it has a bug for narrower screen sizes (I was testing wider screen before, sorry!). I filed a bug ticket and we’ll working on it as soon as possible.
