    hello,

my sidebar moved to the bottom after i added the “continue reading” line to my latest 15 posts. here is a link to my blog: http://traderjanki.wordpress.com
my theme is mistylook. i already tried switching to another theme and switching back but that did nothing. could you tell me what i’ve done wrong so i can fix it? thanks so much.

First of all, could you turn off the snow storm thing? I choke’s my browser while I’m trying to figure out what is going on.

Thanks, I’ll take a look now.

There is some strange code in your first post. Did you perhaps paste it in from MS Word or something?

Open your first post like you are going to edit it. Place your cursor somewhere in the post text area and do a select all (ctrl-a windows or cmd-a mac) then click on the last icon on the right end of the toolbar (extended tool bar icon). On the second row of icons, about in the middle is an icon that looks like a whisk broom or a brush (hover your mouse over it and a tooltip will pop up saying “clean up messy code”. Click that icon and then save your post and all should be well.

One other thing I would suggest is to cut back on the number of posts you show on a page since even with my 5mb connection speed, your site takes a while to load due to the high number of images. Go to options > reading and reduce the number under “Blog Pages” “Show at most: __ posts” to say, 5. This will greatly speed up page loading and you must remember that the majority of people out there are still on dial up. Hard to believe, but it is true.

I would also suggest that you optimize your images so that the file sizes are smaller Here is a very useful FAQ on image optimization: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/05/08/optimise-your-images/ . File sizes of around 35-50k display well and take far less time to load than the 200k image files you have now.

hey, thanks, i did try that but it didn’t move the sidebar back up (i had pasted that post in from word). so i cleaned up the code but the sidebar is still in the bottom…

  • Unknown's avatar

okay i’ll show 5 posts (i used to show 7 but today tried to move it up to 10…) and i’ll check out how to make the images smaller, too, thanks for these tips.

i’m going to try cleaning up the messy code on the 5 posts that will appear when my page loads by pressing the broom button… also thanks for the optimize image tip, i have picasa so i’ll look into how to make it work.

  • Unknown's avatar

Picasa will do it for you just fine. There has to be a problem in one of the posts on that first page although I don’t know which.

On the extended toolbar is a icon with a “W” in it which is for pasting from Word, so if you paste something else in from word click that icon first and then paste the word stuff into the window that opens and then click “insert” and it will strip out and fix the miscellaneous code that causes problems.

okay, thanks for the other tip. i tried cleaning up the code on 7 posts but it still didnt work. is there something else i could do?

Open the first post and click over to code view. At the beginning of each paragraph you will find:

    <p class="MsoNormal">

    Remove the
class="MsoNormal" so that it looks like this: <p class="MsoNormal">

Do that wherever you see that string. MsoNormal is not defined in the css of mistylook and I would have though that the code cleanup would have removed it.

  • Unknown's avatar

Rats the second line should have looked like this: Remove the

class="MsoNormal" so that it looks like this: <p>

  • Unknown's avatar

By the way, did you do the “select all and select everything (everything highlighted), including the image, in the visual view before pressing the messy code cleanup button?

  • Unknown's avatar

okay, i removed the class=”MsoNormal” so it was just <p> but it is still messed up. did this have anything to do with me adding the “continue reading” things into my posts?

  • Unknown's avatar

yes, i did select all (ctrl-A) with the image included, before pressing the messy code cleanup button.

  • Unknown's avatar

No, the continue reading should not have any effect in that regard. Let me do a little more searching and I’ll be back.

The only other thing I see out of the normal is in you post “would you like a coke with that dosa?” the more tag is centered. Open up that post in code view and delete the “more tag, then click the left align button and insert the more tag again.

    /nod to tsp

I have also checked almost all the pages and every post seems normal enough except the “would you like a coke with that dosa?” one. And I suggest you should do whatever thesacredpath has suggested in the previous comment and that should fix things up.
