Sidebar problems–PLEASE HELP!!
-
Okay, i’m using the Ocean Mist theme and I have never had sidebar issue with this theme. I’ve had this theme for a while now but today the sidebar disappeared from the right side to the bottom of the page. I also do not have a solid background for my post (has also disappeared). Please help, much appreciated.

What have you added to your blog today? Typically this is caused by an image or something similar that is too wide that was added to a post or the sidebar.
-
For one thing, there is a problem with this image file, it will not load: http://static.feedlounge.com/buttons/subscribe_0.gif . Not sure if their site is down or what.
Since your second page is fine, it’s definitely something that is on the main page.
-
What is your blog URL? It’s much easier for us to help you when we can see what you’re talking about.
-
Is this the blog you are talking about http://checkuponit.wordpress.com/ ?
I just ran a validation on your blog’s main page at W3C and it reported that there are 145 html errors on your main page alone: http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fcheckuponit.wordpress.com%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0
My first recommendation is to have a look at the errors (link above) and get the majority of them corrected. Most browsers are forgiving, but asking them to forgive 145 errors might be too much.

You are using the shockwave flash code from youtube to post videos and flash is not allowed on wordpress.com and is causing issues. That is the bulk of the errors on your pages.
This FAQ which I got by searching for “youtube” in the FAQ searchbox explains how to post youtube videos here at wordpress.com: http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/07/29/how-do-i-post-a-youtube-video/
You need to correct all of these or you are always going to have problems.
-
The same goes for your dailymotion videos and again, here is an FAQ that explains the proper way to display them: http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/01/19/how-do-i-post-a-dailymotion-video/

thesacredpath – you seem pretty knowledgeable about this stuff. Can I intrude and ask a related question?
Ever since I posted the other day, some text in my sidebar extends beyond the boundry of the sidebar (http://whereschristmas.wordpress.com/). I tried deleting the last two posts but there was no improvement (I re-posted them, but lost the comments in the process). I haven’t tried deleting the third most recent post, because I’m pretty sure the problem occured after that.
I Don’t know if this makes a difference, but I do all my blogging on Live Writer and post directly from there. This is primarily because I don’t hardly know anything about code. It’s always been easy as pie with no problems, then suddenly this happened.
Any advice you have is appreciated.

Your top clicks are mostly links and there is no way for the system to”break” and “wrap” them so they extend over into the post area. That’s always a problem with URL’s. You can keep this from happening by using linking the url to a word or phrase using this:
<a href="put full URL here">put text here</a>
As an example: How to write links. “How to write links” can be wrapped by the system, but the link it really cannot wrap (well it could, but I think this theme has problems). On recent comments, try going in to presentation > widgets and setting the recent comment widgets not to show avatars. That may help. This theme looks like it may need some backend massage work

Thank you! That’s very helpful, I appreciate your help. What about the heading “Main Menu”, which also is too far to the right. Is there any thing I can do to correct that, or is that simply off due to the links below?

I’m sorry to say that I do not know what you mean by this:What about the heading “Main Menu”, which also is too far to the right. Is there any thing I can do to correct that, or is that simply off due to the links below?
From what I can see the headings in this theme are functioning exactly like the theme designer has them coded to function. (Also note that we cannot edit our underlying templates at wordpress.com) Please be more specific about “main menu” so I can locate whiat you mean by that and what you are seeing.

You’re still talking about http://whereschristmas.wordpress.com/ right? That’s coded into the CSS and would require the CSS upgrade and hacking the CSS in order to fix it. The Vermillion theme needs some tender loving care from a CSS guru to clean it up.

Easy to do when they are not active. I still had it open in a tab on my browser. Whoever invented tabbed browsing should win a prize of some sort.
-
Until yesterday, it appeared just fine. But, now suddenly, it’s off to the right. What could I have done to affect that?
-
I’m viewing it in firefox 2.0.0.11 and the sidbar (main menu) is displaying fine.
Setting that aside, hopefully, that is not advertising that we see in your wordpress.com blog because advertsing is not allowed on free blogs hosted by wordpress.com and can result in blog deletion. http://faq.wordpress.com/2005/12/08/adsense/
Also note any clarification of advertising policy MUST come from staff. -
I just viewed your blog using IE7 and it looks fine. What browser and version of it are you using please?
-
Hi timetheif! I’m on IE6 (my employer won’t allow us to use IE7). It’s been fine up until two days ago. I guess it’s not crucial. I just can’t imagine what I could have done to cause it.
I’m not sure what you’re referring to about advertising. I’ve read the article you linked to previously (it might have been you that referred me to it). I do have one discreet link to Amazon. Otherwise, no paid or sponsored text or links. I believe I’m in compliance, but please do let me know if you disagree.
-
Ahhh … IE6 is problematic. As for the advertising it sounds like you’re complying with the policy but, it’s not up to me to make the call.
Best wishes :) -
