  It seems I can only make a footer widget. There are no options for a sidebar widget, which I’d prefer.

  In old days every blog was designed to have a sidebar on every post and page. This is no longer the case. Here is the link to your detailed theme description page http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/trvl/
