Sidebar widget
-
Hi there, I have customised the sidebar widget but it doesn’t appear on my site. Why is this? I’m presuming I’ve done something wrong?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The Eighties theme is not designed to show the sidebar by default.
The sidebar (and all the sidebar widgets) appears in the slide out panel that appears when you click on the hamburger icon at the upper right corner of the screen.
Are you able to find your widgets on the slide out panel?

Thank you yes I worked this out, but appreciate your response. On a completely different subject, so sorry if I shouldn’t ask it here.
Is the eighties theme also designed not to show social media icons? As I would like to place these.
Cheers

No need to apologize :-)
This is indeed the right place to ask questions related to the blogs hosted on WordPress.com.
Social media icons (aka Social Links Menu) are displayed underneath the main navigation, which is accessed by clicking the menu toggle icon (three horizontal lines) at the upper left corner of the page.
We can add social icons to one of the three footer widgets supported by Eighties theme using this guide: Add Social Media Buttons to Your Sidebar or Footer.
However this may not be what you want because now the icons can be seen only by scrolling down to the footer. But this is how this is designed.

Thank you so much for your further reply. I have added the menu but cannot work out how to add the icons / links?
I have actually tried to work this out so apologise for my ignorance.

No need to apologize. We are all learning here :-)
Seems you haven’t created the menu. Could you please follow the instruction in Add a Social Links Menu support page and then we will go from there if you have any other questions.
Please feel free to ask if you have further questions.

I noticed that the same (Menu1) menu is assigned as both Primary and Social Menus which is why you see a gray strip under the search box in the left slide out panel. That gray strip is actually your main menu pretending to be the social links menu :)
So we need to remove that gray strip and add social links menu in that place.
[1] To remove the gray strip:
a) Go to Appearance > Menus dashboard screen
b) Scroll down a bit on the page and un-select the Social Menu check box at the lower right corner of the page.
c) Click on Save Menu.[2] Add social links menu:
Create a new menu for social links using the steps mentioned in the Add a Social Links Menu support document.
The social icons will appear automatically when you add the corresponding links as mentioned the support document.
Please give it a try and lets see how it goes.

Hi Chaitanyamsv,
I followed your tips but couldn’t find the very first step which was the Creating a Custom Menu and so couldn’t work out how to then do all the other steps. The drop down boxes primary menu and default menu do not appear so I couldn’t go any further?

@offthevineguru, if you go to Appearance > Menu in your dashboard, on the right you will see the Menu Structure section. Right now you have both the Primary and Social Menus selected at the bottom of that section which means that your Menu 1 menu is being shown in both locations. Uncheck Social Menu at the bottom and click Save Menu.
To create your social menu, at the top of the Menu page, click “Create a new Menu” link. You can then add the social services you desire, using the Add a Social Links Menu document that staff-happychia referenced. Don’t forget to name your new menu, and when you have your social menu items added, check “Social Menu under Menu Settings below where you added your social services and then save your new menu. You can then visit your site and if you click on the Menu icon at upper left, you will see your social menu icons.

Thank you so much and sorry to be such a bother. This really helped and I now have my social icons on display.
Cheers
