Sidebar widgets

Why in the hell would you allow a Theme to be uploaded to this website that completely wipes out someone’s sidebar widgets? I had the sidebar all set up just like I wanted it and now, with the activation of a new theme I wanted to try, it’s all gone. Now all I have left is that idiotic archive list.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You are making an erroneous assumption. All support docs are at http://support.wordpress.com
    See: https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/

Themes are just “skins” on WordPress.COM hosted blogs. You can quickly and easily change themes on any WordPress.COM hosted blog to another one found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ and no data will be lost or negatively affected by the change. The only time you may have to do some work is if you are changing to a dramatically different theme and have done any CSS editing.

Every theme has a detailed theme description page with set up instructions and a live demo site. I would consult those before I made the switch.

And, the theme customizer allows us to preview a new theme.
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/customizer/

Provided you are logged in as Admin under the same username account that registered the blog go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes, Browse themes until you find one you like and click “activate” or “preview”, or type in the name of the theme you want to use and when it appears click “activate” or “preview”.

After you change your theme all you need to do is go here Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets and re-install them where you want them to appear. The widget contents and settings will be the same as they were prior to changing themes.

  • I know it can be disconcerting to find your widgets moved after a theme switch.

As Timethief mentioned, your widgets, along with their settings, are preserved in the Inactive Widgets section after a theme switch. Drag them back to your desired widget area in the new theme to display them.

Let me know if you need further help.
