Sidebars

I had someone else set up my website/blog here on WordPress. Since then I’ve added new pages but I don’t want to show some of the new pages in the sidebar menu. How do I take them out of the sidebar? In particular, I don’t want to show the recipe pages in the sidebar on my website. I have connected the recipe pages to the name of each book page instead. They don’t need to be included in the sidebar. If you could help I would appreciate it. Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi, Maxine

if you’re using Custom Menu feature, go to Appearance → Menus and remove undesired sub-pages from the custom menu. After that, you should disable the Auto add pages option.

    Menus

    That should do it.

If your sidebar is using the Pages widget you can exclude any pages from the displayed hierarchy. The Pages Widget support page says,

Exclude: If you would like to exclude any pages from being displayed, you can enter the Page IDs (separated by commas). To find the Page ID, go to Pages → All Pages and click the title of the page. The address bar of your browser will display a URL with a numeric ID at the end. This is the page ID.

Thanks for your replies. Unfortunately there was no remove sub-page button under Appearance-Menus. There is only an add page button.

I also went into the Pages Widget area under Appearances, Widgets, Pages but there is no drop down under that so I can add the ID.

I’m wondering if the theme I’m using doesn’t allow me to take off the sub-menus in the sidebar.

The Pages Widget is not an icon on the dashboard Admin panel.
It’s in your Widgets page. You can access the Widgets page from the Admin panel, however, by clicking on the Widgets icon under Appearance.

Available Widgets will be found on the top left in alphabetical order. Find the Pages Widget and drag it over to the right side, placing it under “Sidebar.” Once that is accomplished — and please do consult the Pages Widget support page again, and us if you get stuck — you can open up the widget and add IDs to the exclude box.

Pages Widget vs. Widget Page…can be a bit confusing, no?

    Maxine,

Actually, I should have reread your initial post. Unless you’ve got a Custom Menu containing those pages, your Pages Widget might already be there under Sidebar on the Widgets Page. You’ll just need to add the excluded IDs and make any other edits there. Save them and check to make sure your modifications are reflected in the publicly viewable widget in the sidebar.

If you have a custom menu, then you’ll remove the unwanted page links on your custom menus editor, as mrlubomir described above, and disable the Auto-add feature.

I managed to find the Widgets Page and I put in the pages ID and saved it, but there was still no change when I looked at it online. Not sure what I’m doing wrong.

Thanks again for all your help.

After reading an article about the pros and cons of the TwentyFourteen Theme, I don’t think I can take off the sub-menus from the sidebar which is why there is no remove button in the Pages, Widgets area. If anyone knows differently please let me know. Thanks.

If the page ID block failed, then you probably have a Custom Menu. Do you have a Custom Menu widget in the side bar? You have some ability to modify the which items display by using the Visibility option in the widget, but that doesn’t allow removal by page ID. What to do, as mrlubomir suggested above, is go to dashboard > Appearance > Menus, and remove the unwanted items under Menu Structure in the appropriate menu (You may have more than one custom menu).

Unfortunately there is no Remove button under the menu structure for the sidebar. I think I’m just going to have to leave it and not include in sub-pages because it will get too untidy. Thanks for everyone’s help.
