  SO, when you sign-up to use a private domain on word press, does word press give you a whatever.wordpress.com domain as well?

  If you do not have an underlying .wordpress.com to domain map from to a domain URL then it’s not possible to map to a domain. Is that what you are asking? http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
