any tips on where my blog has gone?

For starters j.b.bernstein.com is not all that legal of a domain name – that would be a sub-domain of a sub-domain of the domain bernstein.com – which is using non WordPress.COM servers

We need a bit more info to help you – what are your trying to do? Map a regular domain name or a sub-domain name?

how do I get back to the default setting?

the blog was working fine on its original settings, and in my infinite dumbness, I tried to follow a tip that popped up on the screen about have the blog point to j.b.bernstein.com..

Try canceling the domain mapping Upgrade

Dashboard >> Store >> My Upgrades

If required – set Prime domain back to .jbbernstein.wordpress.com/

Dashboard >> Store >> Domains

bernstein.com. – has been registered since 1994 – JBBERNSTEIN.COM was registered yesterday with Network Solutions

You could try the .me domain or try putting in some dashes j-b-bernstein.com or jb-bernstein.com is open as is jbbernstein.me

do a whois to see if the domain has been registered http://www.whois.com/

then come back here and register the domain name you want
