Not sure what the term ‘My site’ means, since I merely placed a comment on the Showalter site re Leonard Cohen. I did read the ‘Terms’ section, but not sure what references to purchases mean; this is the first time I have placed a comment on a Word Press site. Do I need an account simply to make a comment? Thanks for your help.

That depends on the site. Site owners control the requirements for visitors to leave comments, and many do select the strictest option that only allows people with their own WordPress.com username account to comment.
The good news is, having a WordPress.com account is completely free, so this won’t cost you anything and you won’t be required to create your own site. But if you really don’t want this account, you can also delete it, and it will be completely removed from our system.
