  I want to design my site and leave my domain running on current provider until the new one is ready. I cannot figure out how to do this.

  You can start with a free wordpress.com website with a subdomain name (mysite.wordpress.com) That will let you learn how to use WordPress and experiment.

  Then once you are ready you can transfer or map your domain over to wordpress.com.

  You will need a paid plan in order to move your domain name over to WordPress.
