Simple Payments: three questions

    Hi folks,

The Simple Payments option looks intriguing. Three questions:

    1) When will it be possible to let visitors choose a variable donation amount (instead of a predetermined price)?

    2) When will the PayPal pop-up interface be available in German? Is this up to WP or Paypal?

    3) At the bottom of the Paypal window, it says “Cancel and return to…” But instead of my site name, it displays my super secret email address! A bug?

  • Hi @baskervillefan,

    1) That wasn’t on the scope for the first iteration, but I’ll file a request for you.

    2) That comes from PayPal.

    3) Can you get a screenshot and upload it to your media library? No need to send a link (so long as you put it in the media library for the site you listed for this thread).

Just update us here and we’ll check it for you.

    Thanks supernovia.

    1) When do you think a variable donation amount might be introduced? In the near future (Christmas? :) or rather mid- to long-term if at all?

    2) The language issue is solved. It was browser related.

    3) I can’t currently upload a screenshot but you should be able to test it with any Simple Payment button (tried this on several browsers). Importantly, I used an email address that is not yet linked to a Paypal account (which should be fine according to the Simple Payments tutorial).

    one more question:

    4) For visitors it’s really not necessary to open a paypal account to do a payment (by credit card), right? Because the pop-up interface tries to nudge people into opening one… :)

  • 1) Couldn’t say: our developers are working on other projects right now, but when they iterate on the simple payment widget, they’ll have that feature request to consider.

    2) Good :)

    3) I have done a fair bit of testing on this because getting it implemented was a big deal to me :) I don’t remember seeing something like that, but perhaps I’m a) looking in the wrong place or b) expecting to see the email address (like if it’s the one I logged in with.) When you can upload a screenshot (not here, to your media library) let me know and I’ll take a look. Thanks!

    4) It isn’t necessary. We don’t have a lot of control over PayPal’s UI.

this is how it looks like, displaying the secret email address (which I entered when setting up the button) at the very bottom of the Paypal pop-up interface (“cancel and return”): https://imgur.com/a/uUuqx

Tried this both logged-in and logged-out, both with and without the WP acccount email address, and on several browsers.

Instead of the email address, I’d expect the name of my site, right?

  • Got it, thanks @baskervillefan. That comes from PayPal’s site, so there isn’t much we can do to hide it on our side. But I will provide this feedback to our team.

  • Also: do know PayPal will let you connect alternate addresses. You could use one just for payments on this form.

yes, it must be an issue either on Paypal’s side or at interface between WP and Paypal.

The thing is, if I use an email address that is not yet connected to a Paypal account (and there may be reasons to do so), but the email address is displayed publicly, it could be hijacked by someone to open an acccount in my name.

So would be great if Paypal could sort this out, hide the email address and display the site name instead.

    Thanks for your help!

ps: looking forward to the variable donation amount :-)

  • If you use an email address not attached to a PayPal account, you likely won’t get your payments. So I definitely don’t recommend that. You need the address connected.

For real? The support page says:

“Payments captured by your new button will be paid out to the email address you add to the button. Double check the email address you entered. Payments are fulfilled by PayPal but you don’t need an existing account to start collecting payments on your site. Any email address that you have access to will work to get started.https://en.support.wordpress.com/simple-payments/

    Is that not correct?

  • To clarify, you will need a PayPal account (now or later) to collect these payments. If it’s a super secret address, PayPal is still going to need it eventually.

If you already have a PayPal account set up, I recommend adding your address to that.

Sure. The issue probably is that with a yet unconnected email address, Paypal takes the email as the account name. To display the site name, they would probably need it from WP. Or else they could just write “return to site/merchant”. I guess everything is better than displaying a personal email address (which are also collected for spam purposes). Would be great if this might be considered in the next development iteration of the tool (together with the variable donation amount ;-) . Thanks & bye.

  • As always, thanks for the feedback @baskervillefan . I’ve shared this thread with our developers and product designers as well.
