Simple way to move reader comments from one post to another?

I am thinking about updating and re-publishing some three-year-old posts. Meaning I will (step 1) post newly edited, updated versions of those posts and then (step 2) delete the original posts.

However, some of the old posts got valuable reader comments that I want to preserve. So before step 2, I want to transfer all the relevant comments from the original posts to the new, updated posts.

The last time when “moving comments” was discussed here was over a year ago, in this thread: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/moving-comments-between-pages?replies=2#post-1376525

The only solution given there for moving comments was a very complex, unwieldy manual one-by-one procedure as described back in 2010 here: http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/12/20/wordpress-com-comments-and-discussion-settings/ (see near bottom of that page).

I’d like to know if in the meantime, WordPress has finally come up with a practical, usable solution to move comments from one post to another.

Does someone happen to know? Thanks!

I assume that you could move comments with a database update, but I wonder why you would do that?

If the old post has some valuable comments and contents, I’d leave it available.

You could publish the new post and have a statement in it, saying that it’s an updated version of an existing post. Then you could update the three-year old post and add a link to the new version in the beginning of that post.

This lets you keep the traffic coming directly to that old post and redirect your readers directly to the new post. That’s the way I handle it with my contents.

Let me know if you want the code for the database update to move the comments.

    Best,

Deleting old posts is never a good idea. It causes 404-not found errors and if your site receives search engine traffic, why put your site visitors through that.

There are several ways to highlight existing content mentioned in this post http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2012/02/16/6-easy-ways-to-feature-older-content/ I’d start there first.

@jan-just a heads up that WPcom users do not have direct access to their site’s database. If you are not clear on the differences between WordPress and WordPress.com, you’ll want to read this http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

You can also update the older Post – then make a new Post (“Old Great Post – Updated”) – about the old Post being updated – put a link to the old Post in the new Post – an image sometimes can really help

also put “updated” in the title of the old Post –

You can also Reblog the older updated Post
