I found the above-linked convo helpful but I still can’t seem to locate a “footer.php file for my theme” (I have the twenty ten theme). Is this still applicable for wordpress 3.1? If not, am I limited to buying the CSS upgrade if I want to have anchor words? This seems unlikely so hopefully I’m just missing something. I’m a rookie here so please be kind ;)

    Thanks.

We cannot run Google Analytics on free hosted wordpress.COM blogs like the one linked to your username in this forum. This is a multiuser blogging platform. We cannot access let alone edit PHP files. Only Staff can edit template and theme file because every edit they make affects all blogs with the same theme.

    Can I use Google Analytics?
No, Google Analytics cannot be used on WordPress.com blogs at this time.

What you are pointing to is a thread in the wordpress.ORG forum. Please read this so you are crystal clear on the differences between free blogs being free hosted by wordpress.com and free software installs for self hosting. The two run on different software. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

We cannot add themes at wordpress.COM, we are limited to the themes found in the dashboard under Appearance >Themes. If you have CSS editing experience, you can get the paid custom CSS upgrade and renew it annually. It will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but it does not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. It does not allow you to remove footer links to the theme designer or to wordpress.com. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM.

Since there is no official Staff support for the CSS upgrade, and precious little Volunteer support, I recommend that you don’t buy the upgrade unless you have at least moderate understanding of HTML and CSS because you must be prepared to do the work on your own.

If you are considering purchasing the upgrade, you can go to Appearance > Edit CSS. There wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try before you buy.

If you do purchase the upgrade be sure to read this article before starting your editing > http://csswiz.wordpress.com/2009/10/15/if-you-have-the-wp-com-css-upgrade/

What are the anchor words for and are you talking about a blog hosted here at wordpress.COM?
