Single image NOT thumbnail size to accompany text

  • Unknown's avatar

I have tried over and over again…and I can’t see how I ever did it on the first page of my blog. Beginners luck!
Every time I upload (Whichever method) I get a thumbnail and even though I check the centre box it comes out at the side. I want an image bigger than a thumbnail.
When I check SHOW > edit in the gallery it comes out a perfect size! Maddening. Is there any way of positioning, or moving images to, exactly where you want them?
I have a short verse (managed to control the lines!) which I have centred…above it I want to put an appropriate image, centered. It is not for lack of experimenting that I am asking for help.
Maybe it simply CAN’T be done. And if I try to edit I cant increase the size…only decrease it, it appears.
I havent published the verse hoping I can get this rght.
    Be grateful for help! Thanks.

When inserting images there are several things that can be set. One is the size of the image. Generally you have a choice of thumbnail, medium, large (has to be defined by you under settings > media before it can be selected) and full-sized. Full-sized will produce an image that is the maximum width for post area in the particular theme you are using. During insertion, you can also set the alignment for the image. When all settings are as you want them, then you can click the insert button and insert it into the post or page.

    Working With Images

On the first image on the main page of your blog, it is inserted at “medium” which has vertical and horizontal limits of 300px. On landscape images (wider than it is tall), using medium will produce an image that is 300px wide. On portrait images (taller than it is wide) the 300px height setting controls, and it will typically produce an image that is a maximum of 300px tall.

I would suggest going to settings > media and then define a “large” size with say 400px for both height and width and then use that for your portrait oriented images.

    Alignments:

None: image is left-aligned with NO text wrap
Left: image is left-aligned WITH text wrap
Center: image is center-aligned with NO text wrap
Right: image is right-aligned WITH text wrap

I’ll offer this as an option as well.

Open the post in the editor, click on the image to highlight it, click on the image edit button and when the window opens, click on the “advanced” tab. You will see height and width fields. If you want your portrait images wider, put a larger number in the width field and then delete the height value. Having only one (height or width) will preserve image proportions.

Thank you yet again. I will try all this again tomorrow. I expect I will be back! I have printed it out.
I feel fairly sure that while it will be better it will not enable me to centre the image over the text (which is centred). Anyway you have to know where the walls are so to speak! I ask a lot of a site that is really for a slightly different purpose. It is not Photoshop after all!
    Cheers. Julia

Do not use the buttons in the editor toolbar to try and align an image. Use the alignment settings in the “insert image” window before inserting an image. I set up one of my test blogs with your theme and inserted several image at the four image alignments with no issues. The “text align” buttons will NOT override the image alignment settings.

Back already.( I hadn’t read your last post) You are amazingly kind…I can’t thank you enough. I managed to do what I wanted while not really understanding why or how I will approach doing it another time!
The ‘large’ button is greyed out not usable. The nearest thing is ‘medium’. Somewhat wildly I tried scale image and used as you suggested 300 pixels as the width as it is quite tall. And it has centred. Maybe I did use the ‘insert image’….I will publish it now just so you can see what I was doing and why…if you can be bothered. I have a few other verses which similarly have attached images. I wanted to know IF I could do it. I’ve made a note of your last post too.
It is called AFRICAN MASK…I will put it under ME on the bar.

Aaaargh. I have lost it! So don’t wasteyour time!I’ve just got the text. Something funny about changing the type to bold. I assumed the image was still there …published and the image isn’t there (I haven’t bothered to list it). I can see the list of revisions but it is all webspeak so I cant go back or CAN I? If so how? I know it was saved. I’ll try to sort it tomorrow. I suspect one of those automatic saves has overlaid the right one.
Anyway thanks. Not so happy tonight. J

See this support document on using the post revisions.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-revisions/

To use the large, you first have to go to settings > media in your dashboard and define sizes there. Then they will show up in the insert image window. By default, there is no size defined for large.

Yes, have done it! Sorted the right one from the auto-saves (which are a bit too much of a good thing in my opinion!). It is ME > Verse for the record.

Re the other …somewhere it said that if you change the thumbnail size to another size you change it for the whole blog. So I am nervous of doing that.
So often it is easier to undo than to return to the original setting.

Off for lunch for a change! Hope life is good in Hawai …Cheers. J
No doubt will be back. Thanks very much again.

“somewhere it said that if you change the thumbnail size to another size you change it for the whole blog”

The changes will apply to whatever you add after the change, not to posts already published.

I assume that means you can change it for each different occasion according to wish? (as I would have expected). That is, one page a different size from others should you so wish? It is amazing how ambiguous words can be!
    Thanks. J
