single picture & gallery in same post

Sorry if this has been covered, I can’t seem to find the exact answer I need. Get close, but not there.

I want to have a large photo above text and 3 thumbnails below. I can make it all happen except the gallery thumbnails below adds the big picture as a 4th thumbnail. I’ve deleted and uploaded the big pic to another page, then inserted from that page. Fourth thumbnail shows up anyway. I’m using basic theme, no CSS or extras. Any thoughts?Thanks,

An image uploaded to a post will automatically become part of its gallery. In order to have an individual image as well, you must upload and insert it in another post, cut its code from the html editor of that post and paste it in the html editor of the gallery post. When you say you have deleted the big pic, I suspect you only removed it from the post itself: you must remove it from the Media Library.

Ummmm, well, I went into media library and deleted the big photo, preparing to re-upload to another post for cutting the html code. When I checked the site (after deletion), the big photo still displayed properly and the offending thumbnail was gone. Apparently I had an extra copy somewhere, although I looked through my media for just that situation.
Oh well, it now looks fine, or at least the way I want it to look. Beginner’s luck?Thanks again for your help.

oops, update. The big picture must have been loading from Safari cache because it suddenly disappeared after a couple days. I did a dummy post, uploaded the same photo again and attached to dummy post. Then copied the html code into original post and now it displays just fine. One more big thank you,.
