single post only not auto-posting to Facebook

  • Unknown's avatar

I link my blog to my Facebook page rather than my FB profile because I know that FB took the facility away of auto-posting to a profile. It generally works quite well, auto-posting to my page, but one post in particular doesn’t seem to want to.

All of my posts usually auto-post to FB, but when I tried to use the FB Share button on this particular post, that didn’t work either, yet it works on the others.

Is there a problem with this specific post that either WordPress or FB doesn’t like? Or is there a known bug? It auto-posted to Twitter just fine.

    Cheers for any advice.

Hi there, just noting that with your paid upgrade, you have access to direct support when you post to https://wordpress.com/help/contact You don’t need to post to the community forums.

Having said that, have you tried disconnecting and reconnecting your publicize to Facebook service? https://wordpress.com/support/publicize/#reconnecting-services

Also, just below that section in the publicize support guide there’s a section on why your post may have failed to publicize.

Have a look there and let us know if you need further assistance with this.

Thank you, and sorry, I didn’t realise the support was different.

Saying that, yes, I have tried all of the things you and the document suggest, and I’ve resorted to sharing the url. But even that isn’t showing a preview, as it usually does, and the FB Share button still isn’t working on only that post. Perhaps it’s a glitch, but I’ll transfer my query to the correct support.

Apologies for taking up your time. :-)

    No worries. Take care.

Seems to be fixed now via a workaround. Thanks.

Hi Diane, the lovely thing about public forums is that they become a repository of information for others searching for solutions for similar problems. If you’d like to share the workaround you used here so that others may benefit from it, that’d be great. If not, no worries. Cheers!

    Sure, Jennifer.

The workaround was to always have a featured image, which I’d stopped doing a long time ago because the template I was using looked a bit ugly with different sized pictures on the home screen.

If there was only one image in the entire post, then the auto-sharing function worked fine and used that image in the thumbnail. But if there was more than one image in the post, that seems to have confused the auto-share. In the old days (and I’m only going back to BGD – Before Gutenberg Default ;-) ), the auto-share used to select the best image for the job, which wasn’t necessarily the best picture. Now it just doesn’t seem to bother auto-sharing as it’s far too confused! (Poor thing.)

The techie then showed me that I could select the featured image to be displayed on the home page, and/or the individual post, or not at all. So even with a template that looked ugly I could switch the featured images off on the home page and at the top of the post but still show them on the shared posts in FB, on Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.

However, since then, I’ve changed template again and I’m displaying featured images on the home screen (but not the individual posts) because now (IMHO) it looks quite attractive. Even on mobile devices!

    Hope that helps. :-)

This one also looks nice with the featured images, but I didn’t want the same template for both blogs: https://alphabetadventurers.wordpress.com/

PS The auto-share still worked on everything else, btw. It just didn’t work on Facebook.

    Well, Facebook. :)

    Thanks for posting your workaround.
