Site Address Change

  • Unknown's avatar

I tried to change my site address (truckdrivewriter.org) to a new address (pamportland.org). Now I have three blog pages, three email addresses and am so aggravated with the layout functionality that I want to just delete everything, and even THAT doesn’t work.

These are the sites I’m currently stuck with the below sites, none of which I want.
    pamportland.wordpress.com
    truckdrivingwriter.wordpress.com
    truckdrivingwriter.org

How do I get just the one site I want with the ability to have a plain layout where I can pick my font and colors? And with just one email address?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Also, I tried using the export/import features to move my posts to another page within my site and the import function did not let me select a destination page, so I may wake up to duplicate posts of everything on my home page. Ugh – so exhausted by this site!

    Hi @truckdrivingwriter!

Happy to work you through this. Currently, on your account, you have the following:

    truckdrivingwriter.wordpress.com

    pamportland.wordpress.com (with domain truckdrivingwriter.org)

Currently, we’re trying to setup pamportland.org. Will this be a completely separate site starting fresh or are you looking to have it takeover the address on one or both of your sites?

Once I know a bit more about what content you would like to keep and how you would like pamportland.org to operate (new site or continuation of current site), I’ll be able to help more!

I definitely want the domain pamportland.org (my short-lived truck-driving career being a great story, but not a lifetime website). If I can move the content currently on truckdrivingwriter.org onto pamportland.org, great, but if not, I’ll repost all 18 blogs posts, because I do want them on their own page titled “Over the Road” on the pamportland.org site.

truckdrivingwriter.wordpress.com can go away, too, so I can keep pamportland.wordpress.com. I’m not overly concerned with my current readership following to the new site because it’s been more than a year since I posted anything, and there weren’t that many followers anyway.

I’d also like to keep (email visible only to moderators and staff) as my email for this account (and for all purposes on the account, site, etc.).

Lastly, are you able to recommend a simple template style that allows me to customize the background color, font color, font style, preferably something with primary content/new posts in the center, and basic widgets to the right?

Seriously, I dreamt about this site last night. It wasn’t pretty. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Ha! “Email redacted!” The AuthorPPortland email address is the one I want to use for everything.

    Hi!

Let me break this down into some actionable steps. Don’t worry – I can’t see the email address. It’s hidden for non-staff members though!

No need to repost! Can you follow these steps?

    1. Register pamportland.org on the site pamportland.wordpress.com by following the steps here:

      http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/register-domain/

    2. Make sure pamportland.org is setup as the primary domain here:

      https://pamportland.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

At this point, all of your content will be available at pamportland.org and the domain truckdrivingwriter.org will automatically redirect there.

Make the necessary adjustments to your site title and tagline here:

    https://pamportland.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-general.php

For example, you can change “Pam Portland” to “Over the Road” if you wish.

truckdrivingwriter.wordpress.com can go away, too, so I can keep pamportland.wordpress.com.

    Follow these steps on truckdrivingwriter.wordpress.com:

    Delete a Website

All of your content will still be safe and sound on pamportland.wordpress.com.

Let’s get those two steps done. Then, we can work on the email address and the theme for your site!

Okay, let me get back home and I’ll follow those steps and be back in touch if I get stuck.

I’m hoping these steps will be easier than driving an eighteen wheeler. Thanks!

I hope so too! If you have any trouble, please let me know.

Okay, success! I bought the pamportland.org domain name, truckdrivingwiter.org has been redirected and truckdrivingwriter.wordpress.com is deleted.

Next steps, the theme appears to be Misty Lake, which seemed like the basic design I want, but I cannot change much with it and the widgets on the right are barely visible. Any recos on possible themes would be appreciated.

I see my additional pages that I created last night are visible. Is there any way to move the past posting to the “Over The Road” tab? This was the header from the former blog and I’d like to isolate the older postings to their own page (and maybe add more one day when I’m ready to cut out those old wounds). If not, I’ll manual create duplicates of the old blogs posts under the cover of TBT.

On the right side of the screen I see my Twitter feed (yeah!) and I added a few widgets for now. I’ll figure out the rest of that set up later.

Thanks for all your help so far. Have the above steps done anything to reduce the number of emails associated with this account?

    Woot! Nice work. :)

How about something like Twenty Twelve?

    https://twentytwelvedemo.wordpress.com/blog/

It has a similar, clean look.

Currently, all of your latest posts will appear on your homepage. So, your old posts will continue to appear on the front page until you post a few new posts that pushes them down a bit. Does that make sense?

However, with that being said, we can still categorize them as “Over The Road.” That way, if someone is interested solely in seeing your old posts, they can all be grouped together. To do that, add a new category titled “Over the Road” as explained here:

    Organize Posts with Categories

Then, use the “Bulk Edit” tool to assign all of your posts to that category:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/#bulk-edit

Finally, we’ll want to put this new Category Page in our menu following the instructions here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/category-pages/#step-3-add-the-category-pages-to-your-menu

Can you give that a try?

Have the above steps done anything to reduce the number of emails associated with this account?

We haven’t changed or addresses the email issue just yet. I’ll reach out to you via private email so we can chat about how to get this switched up.

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay, mostly successful but not entirely. I added the “Over the Road” category to all of the posts using the Bulk Edit functionality. Done.

Next, I created a page from that category and added it to the menu. I can see it in the list. Done.

However, even though the category page “Over the Road” appears on the menu list, it does not appear on the blog. I repeated the process, but no luck, so I need to figure out how to make the change appear on my blog.

I’ll give the 2012 theme a try. Thanks, again.

Regarding step three, adding the menu to my page, disregard. I nailed it.

And I went back to my old theme. It’s quirky and odd, but that seems fitting.

I’m going to take a look at the emails on the account and see what I can do with those. Tomorrow.

    Nice! That’s great to hear.

Let me know if you have any troubles with the email address change or anything else while setting up your site!
