Site backup?
-
Does wordpress work with any backup companies – such as CodeGuard or Dropmysite – to allow archiving my site from wordpress.com and versions of previous instances of my site?
These sites appear to require mysql access, which of course I do not have, and do not want. However, it would seem that remote access to the XML export file, and then downloading all images / content referenced by the posts would allow a complete backup. I would hope that WordPress.com is working with a backup/ archival company to allow backup / versioning of sites.
Thanks. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Dear timethief,
As far as I can tell, WordPress.com export is exactly like WordPress.org export in that it only exports the content of the MySQL database, and NOT the image or other attachment files.
Am I wrong?
My 400+ posts over the last 10 years have 100’s of attachments.
I need a backup of all those files along with a file – like the XML file – that will bind the two together.
Do we have a solution for that?
With my self-hosted wordpress.org file, I could easily download the content files using FTP. I don’t expect FTP access to the wordpress.com site, but it seems I need something like it to download the content, or allow another site to back up those files.
Also, of course your export does not say that there is any versioning, so that if an errant editor does make a mistake, there is no way to back out those changes. Thanks again,

WW.. part of my thinking too. Am very used to FTP, but getting ready to migrate to WP.
In a post earlier today (as of this writing still no replies), one of the questions I ask for help with is offline editing- at last there I could save core files before uploading to WP. Your thoughts, Sir?

the ability to download & backup the Media Library is not something that can be done other than by one item at a time, which for hundreds of items is not even a good thing to suggest to someone
But backing up the Media Library is a feature that many people have ask for in the past – so I have flagged this for staff attention so they can put a mark on the wall or the proper o2 blog that more people want that function

Auxclass.. ok, thanks..
Yet, what do you imagine (or know) most people do to protect their work on WP.com?
Thank you,

Most people keep the original pictures on their hard drive – but in my case the hard drive is not always well arranged – some pictures are in a web pictures folder, others are in the master folder for my camera. So not all in the same place, and yet other pictures are in a master backup from before I was hosted here
The ability to download and backup the Media Library to a PC (or other file storage service) is ask for on a regular basis.
As more and more people are posting photo blogs from their cell phones, the backup Media becomes more important to them as a way of keeping important photos safe.

Hi there,
I have indeed made a mention of this ticket as another request for the ability to bulk download images.
If you are definitely interested in maintaining your own copies of all of your content (including all media), you may want to consider setting up a self-hosted WordPress.org site (you can even do it on your own computer using WAMP). Once it is set up, you can export your WordPress.com site as regularly as you’d like and then import it into your WordPress.org version (this will pull all of your media over to the .org installation). Once there, use a backup plugin to back up all of your content and zip it up into an easy-to-maintain file.
It’s a bit more complicated than some folks like doing, but I’ve seen it work for a lot of people, so I thought I’d share this solution!

I’ve had a self hosted WP site for 10 years. I moved here because my site was hacked – the second time in 5 years. When I moved here, I gave up some plugins, a Coppermine photo gallery and an SMF forum [Although that had not been used in quite a while.]. I host my shareware programs on SourceForge, not as zip files here. I’m looking for the “Security” of someone else fixing up after hacks. With Smugmug and other photo sites out there, the only thing I feel I’m missing is the ability to back up my content.
Thanks for passing my [our] concerns on about backing up our content files, not just the XML which I’m quite familiar with doing.
