The response I received says its free, but it is not free, they want to bill me 36£ and my website.com is free for a year and they will charge me after a year period. Why would I pay all these costs?

Hey there Alexandre,
Thanks for reaching out with this, as I know it can be a little confusing. There are two ways to set up your existing domain with a WordPress.com site, transfer and connection.
A transfer will move the registration of your domain to WordPress.com and does come with a yearly fee. Transferring would also mean that you would no longer need to pay for the domain with your current registrar, in this case, Ionos. The other option is a connection which would allow you to use your domain with WordPress.com but keep it registered with your current registrar. Domain connections are free but require a hosting plan for the site they are connected to.
There are two ways to use a domain that you’ve purchased elsewhere with another registrar – Domain Connection and Domain Transferring. Summary Connecting a domain (also referred to as domain mapping) means that you connect your domain with your WordPress.com site, but you renew the domain at your registrar (where you bought the domain), and renew your site plan here at WordPress.com. DoIt sounds like you may be seeing the price for transferring the domain to WordPress.com rather than keeping it with Ionos and connecting it. You can set up a domain connection following our help guide here.
Hope this helps!
