Site Control for Move

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi!

I am considering moving my wordpress.com blog to a host, but I would like to know how much control will be allowed once the move occurs. I do see that you guys have a list of recommended hosts, but what if I decide to go with a different host outside of the ones that are listed? I would like to keep my current word press domain name, but be able to do whatever I chose, in terms of design, and not have to contact you in order to do so. In other words I don’t want to be limited or restricted. Will I be allowed to keep all of my blog’s contents? I did read some information for wordpress.org, but I ‘m not sure if I’m interested in transferring there. This is all hieroglyphics… please help! It would be awesome if you guys had an alternate method of communication… phone. Thanks for your time.

    Hello there!

First and foremost, this guide will step you through the process of moving your site to a WordPress.org instance:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

As we only support sites hosted here at WordPress.com, all issues with the new site – including the importing of the file – must be taken to the WordPress.org support community:

    http://wordpress.org/support/

If you’d like assistance moving your WordPress.com site to WordPress.org, we have a service called Guided Transfer that does all the work for you. Check it out to see if it’s right for you:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/

    To answer your questions individually:

I do see that you guys have a list of recommended hosts, but what if I decide to go with a different host outside of the ones that are listed?

Absolutely fine. You can move to whatever host you want. The only time we have requirements is if you want to use our Guided Transfer. If you’re moving on your own, choose whomever you want as a host.

In other words I don’t want to be limited or restricted. Will I be allowed to keep all of my blog’s contents?

Your content belongs to you, not us. You can do whatever you want with it. You’ll export it from WordPress.com to your new host, and the world is your oyster.

I did read some information for wordpress.org, but I ‘m not sure if I’m interested in transferring there.

There is no “there.” :) WordPress.org is where you can download your WordPress software, and get information about WordPress.com, plugins, themes, etc. It’s not a place where you would host a website. It’s just where you can get the free WordPress software and touch base with the WordPress.org community.

This is all hieroglyphics… please help!

Just a word of warning: when you move to WordPress.org/self-hosting, you no longer have access to our staff of Happiness Engineers to help. It’s a much more hands-on experience on your part. You’ll be on a different server, so we won’t have access to your site or your files. You’ll be on your own.

You can get in touch with the WordPress.org forum community to ask for assistance, or, if you feel nervous about doing it on your own, you might employ someone to set up the site for you.

Yes, you do have certain freedoms if you manage your site without WordPress.com’s hosting, but you do lose the community/assistance.

I am happy to answer any other questions you have. Let me know what else is on your mind. Thanks much!

    Hi, ThatRobyn!

I am interested in purchasing the guided transfer package. I am clear in terms of making the purchase, but I read…

Guided Transfer: One of our Happiness Engineers will transfer your site to a self-hosted WordPress.org installation with one of our partners. They will transfer over all your content, install and configure plugins to support features you have used on WordPress.com, switch your domain(s) over, and provide support on your new WordPress.org install for a two-week period.

If I do not wish to use one of your partners ( Blue Host, SiteGround, or Host Gator) can I still pay for and receive the guided transfer service with the two weeks of support? What steps are involved in the guided transfer process and how long does it take? Will everything, including my current theme be transferable?

I’m afraid not. Guided Transfer is only available if you are moving to one of our partners.

What steps are involved in the guided transfer process and how long does it take?

The process takes about 24 hours. The Happiness Engineer that works on your transfer will go over the steps of the process with you.

Will everything, including my current theme be transferable?

Here’s the list of what’s included in the guided transfer package:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/#what-does-the-guided-transfer-include
Themes are not included in the transfer, but both of the themes you are currently using (Newsworthy and Mystique) are available for self-hosted sites so you will be able to install those themes on the new site without a problem.
