Site crashing

Help! I was trying to work on my site and I think I messed it up. I was trying to make it secure and I thought I was following instructions by changing the http to https under the general settings. Now I can’t access the site. Please contact me with how to resolve this issue. [redacted] or (email visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Hi @ifitnessteam, I redacted your phone number — these forums are public and we don’t want random people calling you pretending to be us.

WordPress.com has chat-based support for upgraded sites on our servers, but it looks like you’re referring to a WordPress.org installation at another host, since we don’t allow users to change those settings here.

Also, staff here doesn’t have access to your installation since you’re using a free copy of the software, rather than our service.

Your host can likely help you fix this though, with the information in this document:
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL

Basically you can hard-code the settings, or edit in your database. Again, we don’t have access to your server or your database, but your host does (as do you) so hopefully you’ll be able to work this out.

In the future, you’ll want to use the forums for WordPress.org here:
    https://wordpress.org/support

Note the free software does not come with tech support, but there is a fantastic community of people out there, as well as plenty of documentation they’ve contributed. And you can read more about the differences between our service and the free software project here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

    Cheers!

  • Just noting as well, while you can complete those steps on your own, I do recommend at least making your your host has file and database backups for you, just in case. In fact they may be able to simply restore a recent backup to fix this. Good luck!
