Site Domain Transfer

    Hey there,

Firstly, what is the support phone number for WordPress, please?

I am trying to migrate my customer’s website (name.wordpress.com) to name.com, which I registered elsewhere on a Linux Server.

After this is done, the customer wants to maintain the website via wordpress.com .
Is this possible even though the site is living elsewhere?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

Have you considered getting Domain Mapping? This means that the website is kept in wordpress.com, your customer will maintain the website via wordpress.com, but it will work with the domain name that you have. You can find out more about it here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

If you really want to move the site to another server, that’s okay! If you would like a Happiness Engineer to do this for you, you can purchase the Guided Transfer. https://en.support.wordpress.com/guided-transfer/

If you would like to do it yourself, there’s a handy guide for moving your WordPress.com site to a self-hosted one. You can see it here: https://move.wordpress.com/

After that, you will need to install the Jetpack plugin to your self-hosted WordPress.org site so that you connect it to your customer’s WordPress.com account. Here’s the Jetpack’s support doc to help you do that:
    http://jetpack.com/support/installing-jetpack/

To get help regarding self-hosted sites, you can try the WordPress.ORG forums here: https://wordpress.org/support/

As for getting support for WordPress.COM, there is no support phone number. Instead, you can get WordPress.com support through these forums and the support documentation.

If you have a Personal, Premium, or Business Plan, you can also get Email and Live Chat support.

You can access live chat by going to My Sites → Help and clicking on Contact Us towards the bottom of the page. Fill out the form and click on Chat with Us underneath.

Here’s complete info on where to get support: https://en.support.wordpress.com/help-support-options/

    I hope that helps!

There is no phone number, however; WordPress offers two great options for support.

For free support you can submit a question to the forums ( forums.wordpress.com ) and a member of our community will get back to you. If you’d like a response on demand, live chat support with our Happiness Engineers is a feature of all of our paid plans.

You can find information on moving a blog here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/ .

For site redirect, please see this support document: https://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/ .

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi there,

You cannot migrate a site to another server and still have it on WordPress.com. The two are mutually exclusive.

If you move your site to your own server, you will need to use the self-hosted version of WordPress, called WordPress.org. You can only export the content of a WordPress.com site to a self-hosted site. The move.wordpress.com guide @sarahcada linked to above explains that.

If you only want to connect a domain you already own to a WordPress.com site, you can use domain mapping instead:

    Hey All,

Thank you so much for your comeback.

    Current status:
I registered a ‘,com’ domain and purchased a Linux Server, upon it I installed files provided by ‘WordPress.org’. I then imported the site in ‘xml’ format into that. So with a lot of buggeration and phone calls to my service provider, I finally got the site up and running.

Thank you again for your sound advice.

  • Thanks for letting us know you got everything set up the way you wanted :)
