Site efficiency

Hello, I have been using IMXPRS to build my website for my pottery (www.handsfullofearthmschao.com). It is really more of a portfolio website. I’m running into an issue that the website is not publishing fully and also loads very slowly because I have heavy pages full of many photos. Each photo links to another page that describes each pottery piece.

I’ve been recommended to create mini-sites for each category (mugs, bowls, plates, vases, etc.) and connect these to subdomains. I’m not an expert at website building, so I don’t know if that is the best solution.

I want to look into how much it would cost to build an effective website given my website needs. Based on what you think I would need to run site smoothly, what do you think I would need with WordPress and how much would this cost?

  • Hi there,

We do not have ecommerce built in on WordPress.com, so to add that ability you will need to upgrade to our Business Plan, which will allow you to install the WooCommerce plugin to add ecommerce functionality to your site.

Additionally the plan allows you to upload any 3rd party plugin or theme “built for WordPress” so you would have the ability to customize you site without limitation.

If I’m honest, I would not recommend such image-heavy pages even if your current site is on WordPress.com. The issue is not really related to the platform you are using, but the fact that it is a lot of data to display on the “finished” page, which would take a good amount of time to load even under the best of circumstances.

In this situation we would typically recommend that you break those up into several smaller pages (page 1, page 2, page 3, etc.) so that that maybe only 20 items are loaded per-page.

I’ve been recommended to create mini-sites for each category (mugs, bowls, plates, vases, etc.) and connect these to subdomains.

This is not something we’d recommend here on WordPress as it’s usually better for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) reasons to have all your contents under the same URL. It also makes it easier to manage inventory since you can do it all on one site, instead of having to log into several sub-sites.

You set up your own site previously? If so you would be able to do the same using our “block editor” tools, no coding skills needed. In that case the only cost would be the Business Plan itself. It’s also worth noting the plan includes 24 hour live chat support for any site questions you have. Since you are new to the platform we’d be happy to help anytime you’re feeling a little lost.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
