Site Feeds are not working – This feed contains errors.

I have two blogs that are giving the following error when I navigate to the feeds:
“This feed contains errors. Internet Explorer will try updating this feed again later.”

The failures occurs on Sn2Trains.com and Sn2Modeler.com, both mapped domains.

I can subscribe to feeds for swoops2011.wordpress.com, another of my sites.
    Blog url: http://sn2modeler.wordpress.com/

  • The first issue is an invalid character in your “Sn2 Crew showing at the 2011 Midwest Narrow Gauge Show” post.

See this for more details: http://validator.w3.org/feed/check.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsn2trains.com%2Ffeed%2F

The second has two invalid characters in “NMRA MCR Division 7 Open House – April 10th” and “http://sn2modeler.com/2011/09/17/introduction-to-time-table-and-train-orders-ttto-clinic-hickory-nc-2011/”

The links above helped me find my problem. Thanks.

Finally finding the problem was tricky and I consider it a BUG in WordPress. The issue turned out to be invalid (hidden) characters in the captions. The the invalid characters were single quote and double quote. I had to go through and remove the hidden characters from the text. Single quote is commonly used for possessive when describing ones action.

I feel the problem is a BUG because wordpress allowed me to create the caption when uploading the images. It is my expectation that wordpress would do one of two things:
    1) Make the text valid in the caption by add the require character mapping
    2) If that is not possible, Not allow the characters in the caption
I’d expect that most wordpress users are at risk of breaking their feeds. This may explain why other feeds I’ve attempted to subscribe to do not work, because it’s an easy problem to encounter.

I’m reluctant to set this entry to resolved, as I feel there is a BUG.

  • Did you copy the caption text from elsewhere?

A common result of this is copying smart (curly) quotes and apostrophes from a word processor, rather than typing standard (straight) quotes and apostrophes from the keyboard.

I may have. It is not uncommon for me to use other software for spell checking and grammar checking. Most likely outlook or word would have been used.

WordPress now seems to have checking, but I’m not yet familiar with it.

    Howdy,

We don’t recommend directly pasting from other programs. Programs like Word can add formatting that conflicts with your WordPress.com theme and break it.

Instead, use the Paste From Word tool to safely remove the formatting and paste the text. Read more about this here:

    Microsoft Word
