Site giving false "did not succeed" follow responses

Your site is giving false “did not succeed” follow responses.
Using my account email address, the malfunctioning site won’t let me follow a blogger using that same address. I am presented with this message:
“Your subscription did not succeed, please try again with a valid email address.”

  • Hi there. If the address is the one connected to your WordPress.com account you won’t be able to use it to follow a blog via email if logged out, because that address is already registered on WordPress. To follow a blog via email while logged out you’ll have to use a different address.

If you simply want email notifications in addition to the blog appearing in your Reader, follow it as you normally would by clicking the follow button in the admin bar, and then enable email notifications from the Blogs I Follow section in the Reader: http://en.support.wordpress.com/following/#manage-email-and-im-settings-for-specific-blogs

Thanks. FYI, I am logged in, and was logged in, when I attempted to follow via email. It would be nice if, recognizing my account email address, the system simply asked if I wanted to receive email notifications.

  • If you click on a follow via email button in a widget while logged in it should automatically subscribe you for email notifications without you having to enter an email, as far as I know. Try clicking the button without entering an email address and see what happens.

Otherwise, you can also enable it via the Reader as I explained above.

Sorry, nothing like what you describe is possible. I’d upload a screenshot if this was possible. I click on the follow tab at lower right. It expands upward and says
    Follow “xxxx”
Get every new post delivered to your inbox
    Join xxx other followers
Then it has a box where my account email address is pre-filled.
Then there is a “sign me up” button. Once I press it, I get the error message described at the beginning of the thread. Pretty effed up, wouldn’t you say? The only logical impression is that the follow attempt was not successful.

  • The follow button at bottom-right typically only appears if you’re logged out. If you’re logged in the follow button should be at the top in the black admin bar.

See how it should look if you’re logged in: http://snag.gy/qDbwv.jpg

This is how it would look if you’re logged out: http://snag.gy/MHq1s.jpg

If you can’t see the admin bar, then either you’re logged out, or that blog is not on WordPress.com. If you give the URL of the blog you’re trying to follow I can help you confirm if the latter might be the case.

    1) It should work whether I am logged in or out, as it is asking me if I want to follow a blog via email, and I am saying yes.

    2) When viewing the blog page, there is no black bar of any sort, only the follow box at lower right. Yet it populated that follow box with my email address. As it is not a password field, I don’t think it was my Chrome browser doing this, but that is possible.

On the page I am typing this, the WordPress forum page, the black bar exists, and has my username, as it did the moment I arrived here. It shows I am logged in. However, I did not log in when I first posted my query. When I got the error message, it was from this page:
    https://subscribe.wordpress.com/?update=invalid
That page also showed, and shows, my username in the black bar, and that I am signed in. I reached the “help” page, in fact, from the pull-down menu under my username. So, if the site recognized me when it told me I couldn’t follow with my account email address, I assume it also knew who I was when I was on the blog, which, if it is of any help, is this: http://mattbredmond.com/

The blog is definitely wordpress, as noted by the logo in the tab on my browser. But definitely no admin bar present, either, and I’ve reloaded more than once. A real puzzle.

Here’s some more fun: we’ve been discussing a Chrome for Mac page. I loaded the blog in Safari, clicked the “follow” tab in the lower right, entered my email address, and instantly got a confirmation message on that tab, and an email.

I use “Disconnect” on Chrome, if you think that might be the problem. If it is, I still blame wordpress as Disconnect works seamlessly on almost every other site I visit.

  • I was going to suggest you check your browser next. Do you have third-party cookies enabled on Chrome? If not, you might want to enable them specifically for WordPress.com as that could be causing this issue. http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/

A service like Disconnect typically blocks websites from setting cookies and WordPress needs to set certain cookies to work correctly regarding your login to the site, so you might want to add WordPress.com to your exceptions there as well.

Will do. Thanks for your excellent help.
