Site hacked
-
I believe my blog was hacked, and an expose I wrote about China Foreign Teachers Union was deleted. This “union” is a Chinese government information gathering unit, pretending to be an independent union run by expats in China (which would be totally illegal and impossible). It collects information about unsuspecting expats in China, then arrests them.
The union sent me emails threatening to hack chinadailymail.com and craighill.net if I did not delete the story. It appears they did just that.
I did an XML backup on 31-03-2013. Is there any way to recover just that one post from the backup? Alternatively, if I restore the entire backup, will I lose all the posts since I did the backup (ie all April’s posts)?

Hi there,
If you do a restore, you will not lose any of the content which you had previously posted.
It is worth noting that some of our customers have reported an issue wherein they’ve been working on a post and then have either opened up a new browser tab or clicked the back button and gone in to another post (or created an entirely new post) and published it. This has confused our post editor and has resulted in the new post over-writing the old one.
All is not lost in most cases though! If you go in to any of the posts which you’ve edited recently and scroll down, you’ll see that you have a list of revisions. In those revisions will be the text for your original post. You can retrieve your post that way. Unfortunately any comments which were made previously are lost however.

The import option says that the maximum XML file size is 15 MB. The XML file I have is 26 MB. How can I select just the one post I need, and upload that on it’s own? Can I split the XML file in an external application?

Hi there,
You can open an XML file using any text editing software, such as Notepad++. You will want to be very careful doing so, but you can certainly try to only import the one post which you’re looking to replace, but you will want to make sure that you include any code surrounding that post, as our system uses that to know such things as the author, the post date, etc.
